The company I work for has a Mazda B1600 pickup (TAY model) that has a recurring problem. After driving the van for a while, the rear drum brakes lock up and the vehicle cannot move. Only after some time has elapsed and the brakes cool off, can the vehicle move again.

The technicians were complaining that they were smelling a burning type of scent from the rear drums. We sent the vehicle by a mechanic, he said he adjusted the brake shoes, the van drove okay for a while then the rear brakes locked up. We then sent the vehicle by another mechanic, same story. The brake booster was replaced about 1-1/2 months ago, but the mechanic (different to the first two) who changed the booster, put in a non-stock B1600 booster. I do not know the type of vehicle that the replacement booster came from. Could the brake shoes still be dragging slightly on the drums causing them to heat up and expand against the drums?

Any advice as to what could be the source of the problem would be sincerely appreciated.

stupid question... have they tried adjusting the rear brake at all ? the hand brake ?

it could be the rear piston cylinder is sticking(or ceasing up) when the brakes is pressed.....try changing the pistons and see...this is often caused when passing tru floods....also try adjusting the rear brakes .

I believe it was adjusted when it went for the annual inspection at the Licensing Office. The inspecting officer wanted the rear brakes to lock up when the hand brake was pulled, so it would have been adjusted to do this. But the inspection was about 4 months ago and it is only now the problem has arose.

The brakes have already been adjusted, at least according to the mechanics. Will ask the mechanic about the piston cylinders.

how long do you drive before it seizes up
anyone check the bearings in the wheel?
when it gets hot it sticks?

Van was driven in afternoon traffic from Chaguanas to Pasea before rear wheels seized.

If the wheel bearings are bad wouldn't they be making a grinding type noise? Could the bearings heat up and seize and then work again like normal when they cool off? I never heard of this occurring with wheel bearings.

well thats why i was asking if it was a short trip it may act like that but chag to pasea is a bit of a haul.

Check and see if the mechanic adjusted the brake pedal from under the dash ,this will cause the piston to engage the master cylinder, but you wont get much of a binding effect when the van is cold only when the brake fluid becomes warm.
Release the adjustment from the pedal.
The pistons could be sticking but i doubth the two would stick together and only when the vehicle runs.

tell them sell the van for small money to me and i go fix it up lol..........
