^^x2

If you keeping it you could look in to Toyo. About $1000 a tyre.

You know, even though I've been bashing the Dunlop GranTrek AT20's and their mediocre off-road performance, they do perform pretty well on the highway in both dry & wet. Haven't had much skidding with them even with hard cornering, and they grip well.

So I guess i'll keep them for what they're worth - pretty decent on-road tyres. I'll probably keep them for a while and save up to for a good set of tyres, I'm thinking to buy a set of General Grabbers or BFG's online and ship them down.

Even though buying online and shipping them costs almost the same as buying locally, I believe in using the same amount of money and getting a better quality tyre than the local crap.

LOCO ,

That price includes changing the valve stems and balancing. I did not change my stems because they were good. the total should come up to abt 49**. Still a pretty penny to spend on tyres, but it gives you 5 years solid, not that the other brands wont.

I agree with Venum - sell the van as-is , let the owner put the new tyres on or go with the roadstones.

Here's a couple reviews for the Kumho Roadventure KL71 A/T's and also the Pirelli Scorpion ATR All Terrains ....

I'm liking these two tyres mostly for their long treadwear life. Both are rated at approx 50,000km's and I've had a set of Kumho Roadventures on the Frontier for almost 65,000 km's now with some tread still on them. I believe they can both match the BFG's in treadwear life.

The kumho seems like a more off-road biased All-terrain while the Pirelli Scorpions are more road-biased from the tread pattern and water-channels.

I've been considering my requirements for a set of all-terrain tyres. 95% of my driving is gonna be on paved road, with occasional wet surfaces. Off-roading will be a secondary and fairly rare function (since DB runs don't happen every month), but after that Blanchisseusse run, I see that it's still a vital function (given that I only got stuck on the clay-soil section, the Dunlops H/T's were still able to handle the muddy parts fairly well).

I'd like to do a bit more research into the General Grabbers, but I think the top of my list for now (esp. considering my budget of $1200 max per tyre) will be the Kumho's and Scorpions.

255/70/R16 and 265/70/R16- Going San Fernando today to get a price feel in places like Laughn&Degannes, CheapJackTyres, MileageMack and anyother places I notice. Certain brands NOT on my list include bridgestone, Roadstone, Micellin and Dunlop.
Not Looking to spend more that 45K in tyres. Expecting to change tyres midyear

The question was asked on teh L200 Owners Club of teh General Grabbers vs the BFG A/T

BFG got the majority say

http://www.l200.org.uk/community/index. ... ic=20006.0

I would go with the BFG's

There's a small tyreshop in El dorado, about 1/4 mile down the road due west from Costcutters on the main road.

THe guy had a set of Firestone Destination AT's, 245/65R15's, can't remember the price, think it was $1200 each.

I just hate how almost every single small tyreshop you go into nowadays sells only the crappy Roadstone Rodian HT's, or some sort of Nexen tyre.

Can't get anything of quality in trinidad... and if you do, it's always out of stock
Went to Mileage Mack on Mucurapo road today, the guy said he sold the last set of Toyo Open country tyres YESTERDAY..... *BAH!!!!*

*sigh*

GOODYEAR 255/70R16 for 1399 Treadwear is 340, does that mean it would give me 2 year? I do 25,000km a year.
And what are you guys thought on the other links?

vharripersad - dude, I wouldn't recommend any of those tyres you chose for anything but on-road driving. Those are all highway tyres and they'd perform poorly off-road except in light gravel and light trails.

If you want to come on any dieselboyz runs and go offroading at all, this would be the tyre I'd recommend for you:

Pirelli Scorpion ATR

Tirerack.com rated this tyre very highly, i think it was in the top 3 tyres. It has an excellent treadwear rating - my dad has a set of Pirelli Scorpion ST/R tyres that he bought from Pricesmart in 2007 back when they used to sell tyres locally - they still have loads of tread and he's done more than 55,000 km on them - I'd even bring them on a heavy trail run, that's how much I'd trust that tyre.

The scorpions were rated highly for on-road comfort and good grip, and they have an aggressive enough tread to take you on most moderate trails (most of where the Diesel Boyz would run anyway, except for Brasso Seco and the Las Cuevas trails).

I'm thinking of getting them myself, if none of my other first choices are available.

Yup they used to sell tyres in the Chag. and POS branches, until around 2007 -2008 or so.
Nowadays they sell online - but the prices you see there when you check out WILL INCLUDE both taxes plus customs duty - so that's the final price you pay.

Also, when you order the tyre from their website, you can arrange to pick up the tyres at any pricesmart branch which you specify, and their service manager will call you when the tyres reach in trinidad.

Not too bad IMO, but I wish they'd sell more All Terrain tyres.

Here's some reviews of the Pirelli Scorpions:

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Pirelli&tireModel=Scorpion+ATR

http://www.tyretest.com/4x4_reifen/pirelli/scorpion_atr/index.html

http://www.treadepot.com/review/scatr.html

http://www.4x4earth.com.au/forum/wheels-tyres/5172-pirelli-scorpion-atr-tyres.html

http://www.ford-trucks.com/article/idx/24/434/Wheels__Tires/article/Ford_F250_Super_Crew_4x4_Pirelli_Scorpion_ATR_Review.html

The general consensus is that the Pirelli Scorpion ATR's have a very long tread-life (I believe they're guaranteed up to 50,000km with Pirelli's Warranty) and they excellent on-road tyres. They're basically the All-terrain tyre for the driver who spends most of his time on the road yet would like to go off-road occasionally (not in mud or heavy clay).

Looks like a good choice for me, if the Kumho's or Toyo's are unavailable.
I can definitely attest to their long tread-life though.....

This isn't the ideal picture, but you can see closely on my dad's L200 that the tread is still pretty well-kept, even after almost 55,000 km's.
Image
(*note - those are the Pirelli Scorpion STR's in 235/60R15 for his L200. If they were 265/70R16's I'd trade for them and slap them on the Navara and then show you guys what Nissan Powah can do.... :D :D ....)

So 99.999% of my driving is on road, main road and highway. Is is a good buy for the Goodyear on pricesmart website?

The trucks I use at work have the Pirelli Scorpion ATRs on them and all i gonna say is that they really suck in mud! I got stuck twice with them already..

The fine print..
-Yes, the trucks are 2wd
-Yes, the trucks are single cab, so they have very light trays / rear ends
-and yes, I did venture into some pretty sticky situations

That aside, while trying to get the van out, I did dig some impressive ruts with the Pirellis, showing that they were trying to bite into the mud and claw their way out. I have no complaints about their traction on wet or dry roads, they hold out quite well!

then you have no need for A/T or anything other than a purely street (H/T or S/T) rated tyre

spend your $$$ on some Kumho, or Toyo or Michelin or GoodYear tyres

vharripersad - yes it's a good buy. It's a bit more expensive outside - masterserv, automotive components and I think quickserv has the goodyears for a bit more than pricesmart.

Only one potentially major problem I see - they only have the tyres in that one specific size displayed there. I don't think they stock other sizes other than what's specified on the tyre's page.

Make sure your tyre size fits.
