The body as well as the probe when bolted to the engine actually grounds the entire thing including the needle, only one wire exits the rear of the gauge and is a switched ground(connected to the needle stopper) for the 5-pin relay.
The polarity of the lower part of the diagram needs to be switched around

Really? Hmm. I will look into this asap and correct the diagram. Thanks for the info. I found it strange when I couldn't figure out how the gauge was grounded. Will test it out weekend and post pictures of it installed.

Bigchief is correct, the murphy gauge has a switched ground output..

We discussed using the gauge to turn on a backup fan at a set temp to add additional cooling when pushing the motor hard, but we eventually realized the backup fan will not save the engine in case of a coolant leak. The best way is to set it up to kill the motor if overheating is detected. A bypass switch to the murphy gauge could also be installed for the rare chance you would need to start the engine even while overheating. (that way you would not be 100% disabled by the gauge).

What I really like about these gauges is that you can see small temp changes while driving / pushing the vehicle hard etc that the stock coolant temp gauge will not show. You will better learn the operating temps of your motor a lot more with a good gauge.

a good friend is working with a team on developing an Engine Temp Management System for their final year project...

some features:
Coolant temp read out/warning
Coolant Level read out/warning
Coolant psi indicator
Aux fan control
Variable thermostat open/shut setting
Engine shut down
plus more

it will be a real "smart guage" for coolant level/temp and water pump monitoring, costly but worth it

TL,

Did you buy the taddle tail ting as well?
The prices not matching up as mentioned in your first post so that is what I am trying to clarify.

Murphy temp gauge alone is $560.
This tattle tail ting is $400... (this is the magnetic cut off switch. From what the woman told me.)

So I want to know if you guys just used the gauge and wired it up into the vehicle without the taddle tail.?

Last month I had a long day, up and down. Reached home after 7, ate something then got a call from my father:
'I in point lisas. The temperature gauge went up and I pull to the side and switch off.'
I: 'all right, lemme make a call, I commin up now with a wrecker'

The over heating was caused by the the water pump casing being corroded and it not generating a pressure to push the coolant.

Engine was saved by not running in a heated state . Spent about a grand to wreck and a grand to repair ... Whereas a new engine to source, transport and install might have reached 15 grand.

Sorry for my late reply. We just bought the gauge and hooked it up to the ignition. In retrospect the best thing should have been to install a system that would not shut you off in the middle of traffic

Yeah. They don't make engines as durable as the LD28.

Can anyone tell me the size of the connection that the murphy gauge uses?
