unless teh vehicle has a viscous coupled center diff you should NOT use 4WD on the street unless you driving in a straight line for reasons that Biggy posted

Third Generation Grand Vitara does not use a viscous coupling

The LSD in the GV is a purely mechanical unit, it does not have any clutches or viscous fluid to fail. It has only 2 side gears and a bunch of tapered wedges that slide back and forth between them. It's really cool, but hard to wrap your head around how it works until you actually see the insides of it..

A lot of people use the 4x4 on wet highways and wet winding roads (north coast) no matter how much I tell them that it will damage their drivetrain.

I keep telling them to buy the right tires rather than running it smooth or buying those hard compound tyres with no traction but last long.

Anyway, I didn't need a 4x4, I would have done fine with a 4x2 for my driving needs. But there were several times I did need the extra traction and was very glad I had it (going up wet slippery hills like corner of cipero and rushworth street or climbing very high curbs if I need to).

boy val, better stop telling them bout damaging the drivetrain and start telling them about suspension wind-up and loss of steering\control round a corner and over a cliff then dead

then they may listen

if the suspension winds up and you cannot straighten around a corner . . . well . . .

Once your tyres grip well, and you don't pull off too hard you should be fine. The stock tyres I had couldn't do it though.

It's only when you pull off from the top of rushworth street facing Scotia that you have the problem.

i wouldnt advise anyone to buy the navara. i have had problems since before 1000km with my manual 4*4 and i bought the van in may. i use the diesel concentrate and i shift at or a lil before 2500 rpm. i do not drive the van hard. also very very limited help from the firm

i wish now that i did not buy the van. this thing is real headache.
