Front mount Intercooler upgrade YD25dti D22 Frontier

Postby TrEnD$eTt@ » November 8th, 2010, 6:22 pm

Ok guys i am considering upgrading the stock top mounted intercooler on my YD25dti to a front mount unit. I've seen a couple of frontiers around with front mounts but am not sure weather they're still running the YD engine. i have already gotten the IC which is exact fit for the air dam in the front bumper however im havin a little problem in terms of re-routing the piping :
1) Least distance i.e as straight as possible.
2) There seems to be no space in the radiator panel to pass the piping.

If any one has done the mod before an can shed some light it would be greatly appreciated...i will attempt to document the process as i go along...

Regards

the top mount is prone too Heat soak from he engine and also begins to leak around the seams of the intercooler.. In terms of mods i have already blanked the EGR ...resulted in a marked gain in performance , my van does not black smoke and engine temperatures are lower.!

I know someone who did this upgrade to their 2.5 turbo Frontier , it didn't make much sense as the vehicle became a bit more laggy due to longer intercooler piping and a slighty bigger intercooler. But they did see an improvement in fuel economy. I guess it pays for itself in the long run.

bigger intercooler - less boost.

Better you do a straight-pipe exhaust and maybe uopgrade or make ur own extractors.

don't bother with the front mount. you already have an intercooler and it is a lot of stress and probably no gain since the extra lag and boost drop will negate the positives of colder air. i have a 3.0 frontier. came with no intercooler. i did the front mount which gave positives and negatives. boost lag increases and max boost dropped from 15psi at 3000rpm to 13psi at 3000rpm. i used a boost controller to bring back up the boost to 15psi but it reached at a later 3500rpm. top end improved a bit where it was mostly noticeable at night. running the pipes is ridiculous, i have a 2" body lift which made it easier since i squeezed a pipe through the bottom of the body and chassis, you do not have that luxury. if you really want more, do exhaust, i did a 3" ss mandrel bent downpipe straight off of the turbo into a 3" pipe all the way to the back. difference = amazing, did alot more for power than intercooler, boost insanely fast and got rid of my flat spot. van pulls smooth and strong through the whole rpm range now. do not even bother with extractors because they have a very short run and would be a very high cost to make for extremely minimal gain. major restriction area of exhaust is downpipe. so dont bother do exhaust if you are not gonna do it from the turbo-back because you will see no difference.
all info from experience with my vehicle
hope this helps you make a decision

i am fully aware of all the issues highlighted above i have a sound performance background ....:) The size of piping choosen has alot to do with boost response ...the original plan was to go with the intercooler and turbocharger upgrade, boost controller and a exhaust system...depending on the fuel demands a chip would have been added..unfortunately i may not be able to continue as the van is now for sale need to get the wife mobile ..if i still have it after january 2012 i will continue as i already have most of the parts.

^^
understood however you cannot use piping more than 2" unless your willing to cut up your van because one pipe has to squeeze past the radiator at the top passenger side. trust me 2" is a squeeze so you are limited when it comes to piping size and intercooler, just saying that you will probably get the same results as me. I just really wanted to outline that the exhaust made a lot more of a difference than the intercooler, so if you are gonna chose a performance mod, i would do the exhaust first.
