ZINC RHS ADVICE NEEDED

Postby centricgtr » September 3rd, 2024, 8:15 pm

Hey Tuners,

This may seem stupid, but anyways.

How do i go about prepping and painting Zinc RHS. My neighbour fabricated a nice railing for my gallery area out of Zinc RHS, I have no idea how to prep or paint the damn thing though, getting alot of conflicting advice from people.

What products do I use?…Jotun?…Kaleidoscope?
Do i sand the surface first?
Do i use a special primer or oxide?

Any advice would be terrific, I want to do it properly and done. Thanks in advance

an epoxy primer followed by a paint - can be oil based, acrylic, epoxy or polyurethane

Shouldn't it be Etching primer, zinc chromate (gray oxide) then paint (gloss paint or industrial enamel)?

etching primer, but sometimes it still doesnt etch if the galvanized coating is new so it flakes off
when the coating ages a little and isnt shiny is best

you should paint zinc chromate primer on the welded areas asap as the galvanized coating would have been burnt off there
i find the grey works better compared to red oxide

Etching primer first, grey /red oxide and whatever color you want to paint after. Lately I've seen rhs rusting (not where cut/joints present). Bad quality products I guess

Any specific brand of these products I should use?….or it doesnt matter. Also what kind of paint?…oil based?

Epoxy primer and etch primer is the same thing?…i see some persons recommending etch primer followed by a regular red/grey oxide.

New zinc ( etch primer, grey oxide, paint)
I use kaleidoscope on all the jobs and it holds out really good.

And yes the grey primer works really good.

Not the same.
AFAIK etch primer is porous while epoxy primer creates a moisture barrier

the crux of the matter is that galvanized surface is hard for paint to adhere to unless it is etched or old

Next time I will try that brand Cause I didn't have success with whichever brand I had used .

Resorted to just paint normal ... And it flake off,,, as expected

what works for sure is spraying or painting wonder rust remover which etches the zinc as it is an acid then regular primer
then rinse off
but wonder ain’t cheap
