Tyre recommendations

Postby Galvatron » September 26th, 2023, 5:59 am

Looking for tyres with a tread wear around 500.
Currently running Maxxis with a tread wear of 320, only got around 1 year from them
Suggestions, thanks.

Kumho Ecowings have a treadwear of about 480. I have a pair of them on the back of my car for 85000km/4 years so far and they still have a little more tread on them.
On the front I have a pair of Yokohama Avid Ascend LX with 800 treadwear. Those on for about 50000km/2 years and have a lot more tread on them. These were more than double the price of the Ecowings though.

Tyre rotations are extremely important for this though, tyres that stay on the front throughout have much much shorter lifespans.

Multiply the rating by 100 miles. True performance varies but is relative to other tire ratings.

I try to stick with treadwear between 300-400. Lower treadwear number is better grip on the road but won't last as long. I prefer better grip

i would think it hard to quantify those numbers
eg what type of road , speed they make up those numbers on

Nope, it supposed to be a function of even wear on an ideal road, but real world conditions make that pointless.

Use it subjectively, in that lower numbers is more grip/fast wear/softer ride, and higher numbers less grip/slower wear/harder ride.

Also, treadwear isn't standard across different tyre manufacturers. For example a Yokohama tyre rated at 300 might wear faster or slower than a Michelin that's also rated at 300. Comparison between different lines from the same manufacturer is fine because testing should be the same.
