British Godfather of AI, 75, QUITS Google over fears the 'scary' tech he pioneered 'may soon be more intelligent than us' - as scientist becomes latest expert to speak out against dangers of artificial intelligence
UPDATED: 08:44 BST, 2 May 2023

The 'Godfather of Artificial Intelligence' has sensationally resigned from Google and warned the technology could upend life as we know it.

Geoffrey Hinton, 75, is credited with creating the technology that became the bedrock of A.I. systems like ChatGPT and Google Bard.

But the Turing prize winner now says a part of him regrets helping to make the systems, that he fears could prompt the proliferation of misinformation and replace people in the workforce.

There is also this from mid-April 2023:

ChatGPT does 80% of my job': Meet the workers using AI bots to take on multiple full-time jobs - and their employers have NO idea

Employees have admitted that they are using ChatGPT - the revolutionary chatbot powered by artificial intelligence (AI) - to work multiple full-time jobs.

They refer to themselves as 'overemployed', because the tool allows them to complete the workload of each role in at least half the time.

Most of the jobs they do involve a fair amount of writing, like creating marketing materials, which the chatbot has proven to be remarkably adept at.

ChatGPT can now crawl the web.

Played with 3 use cases that were not possible before

Case 1:
I asked it to review my CV on dropbox and extract some keywords for me to use in a word cloud. I only provided the URL and it did what I wanted.
Case 2:
I asked it to summarise a wikipedia article for me. Just gave it the URL, told it create an executive summary and it did what I wanted.
Case 3:
I asked it to crawl GitHub for a particular type of project, and make a recommendation based on active contributions, low bug reports, and large amount of downloads or forks. I didn't link to anything, but it returned a repo that matches what I wanted. You can prob prompt engineer it to return 3-5 options for you to evaluate.

Even the Archie Bishop tried out ChatGPT.

https://catholictt.org/2023/04/27/ai-a- ... ion-on-us/

The bold piece is what he got as the answer from ChatGPT.

The rest is his commentary on the answer.

This week I asked the question: What does an analysis of “Conversations with Archbishop J” reveal?

An Analysis by CHAT GPT

“‘Conversations with Archbishop J’ is a series of articles published on the Catholic News website that explores the insights and reflections of Archbishop Jason Gordon, the Archbishop of Port of Spain in Trinidad and Tobago. These conversations cover a range of topics, from personal spirituality to social justice issues affecting the Caribbean region. This essay will provide a detailed understanding of the contents of these conversations and how they can impact readers.

The conversations began with Archbishop J discussing his personal faith journey and the role that Catholicism has played in his life. He speaks about the importance of finding joy and peace in one’s faith and the need to be open to the promptings of the Holy Spirit. The Archbishop also reflects on the challenges that come with being a public figure and the need to stay rooted in prayer to maintain his sense of purpose and direction.

One of the recurring themes in these conversations is the Archbishop’s concern for the poor and marginalised. He speaks about the need to address the root causes of poverty and the importance of social justice in building a more equitable society. The Archbishop also discusses the Church’s role in promoting social justice and the need to work with other faith communities and civil society organisations to bring about positive change.

Another important topic that the Archbishop addresses is the need for unity and reconciliation within the Church and society. He speaks about the importance of listening to different perspectives and engaging in constructive dialogue to overcome divisions and build a more cohesive community. The Archbishop also emphasises the need for forgiveness and healing in relationships that have been damaged by conflict or injustice.

The conversations also touch on a variety of other topics, including the role of women in the Church, the importance of interfaith dialogue, and the challenges facing young people today. Throughout these conversations, Archbishop J draws on his own experiences and insights to offer guidance and inspiration to readers.

Overall, the conversations offer a rich and insightful reflection on a wide range of topics relevant to the Catholic community and beyond. The Archbishop’s deep spirituality, commitment to social justice, and focus on unity and reconciliation make his insights particularly relevant and timely in today’s world.

For readers, these conversations offer an opportunity to deepen their own faith and understanding of Catholic teachings, as well as to engage with some of the pressing social issues of our time. The archbishop’s emphasis on listening, dialogue, and cooperation also provides a model for how individuals and communities can work together to build a more just and equitable world.

In conclusion, ‘Conversations with Archbishop J’ is a valuable resource for anyone seeking to deepen their faith and engagement with the wider community. Through his reflections on personal spirituality, social justice, unity, and reconciliation, Archbishop J offers a vision of a more compassionate and equitable world, rooted in the teachings of the Catholic Church. His insights and guidance are a testament to the power of faith to inspire positive change and bring people together in common cause.”

The Reveal

At first glance the response is humbling. It gets the main themes of the articles that have been written over the last five years. It connects the themes with spirituality and the office of the Archbishop. It even analyses personality traits in the writing. It gets my intention to assist readers deepen their faith and live the Catholic life more fully. At first reading, I was stunned and humbled by the analysis.

The thing is, I asked ChatGPT, a new artificial intelligence (AI) portal, to do the analysis. It stunned me because it summarised my aspiration for the weekly column. It pulled together both the key themes and the dynamic of formation that I have been striving for.

My first read was dazzling as it put forward an ideal that I have been striving for. Can artificial intelligence be that good? If it is, we humans have just had a major upgrade in technology that will make the jump to the Internet and the smart phone look like child’s play.

Pause and breathe, this is a significant moment in humanity.

A challenging perspective

Digging deeper, I realised that the analysis was shallow and flattering. There is no growth point or area for improvement.

I asked ChatGPT to analyse the fictional work of a different bishop. The same superlatives and themes emerge. The only challenge was the work did not exist. It found themes of spirituality, social justice, nature of God, etc, but it was never written down. The chatbot has a sense of what a bishop should write, and it uses this to fake an analysis, which has enough truth to seem plausible.

A Barbadian friend used the AI programme to research me and ChatGPT did not know I was bishop in Barbados. So, we know it still has a lot of information missing. But we also know, it can fudge and fill in blanks and take a very optimistic view of a topic enquired about.

This is dangerous because it gives a very biased view of the real world. It does not manage to differentiate, to dig deeper, to do what we humans do, see not only what is, but what is missing and what ought to be. It did not give an analysis; it gave at best some optimistic impressions.

Here is the first challenge with AI, it is as good as the information it is fed. The bias or inadequacy of the programmer is going to show in the bias of the answers. Like all algorithms this will amplify some perspectives and disproportionally undervalue and highlight others. We can only assume our correct prejudices will be amplified. That will be dangerous and divisive, serving the rich and powerful.

AI is in its infancy and still learning. This is important. It will get more accurate the more we use it and train it.

Not too long from now, it will dig deeper, analyse better, and be more nuanced. As it develops, it will imitate us more and more with all our shortcomings. This means it will be employed to do the good, the bad and the ugly.

This is more of a reflection on us, than it is about technology. If we are to shape this brave new world, we humans need to steadfastly form our conscience and consistently help ourselves and others to choose the moral way.

The biggest challenge is AI becoming sentient, i.e., imitating our learning, emotions, and feelings. If this is allowed, it will either be a great tool in the development of the world. Or it will be the beginning of the war with machines, played out in so many movies.

While we are happily upgrading technology, we need to relentlessly upgrade human conscience and capacity to consistently make good moral choices.

Key Message:

As we grow technology to become more powerful and to serve us in this new brave world, we must also evolve morally to shape this emerging world and our future.

Action Step:

Reflect on your use of the Internet. What does it tell you about yourself? Are your choices self-denying and about taking up your cross—sacrificial? Or, self-indulgent?

Unnecessary panic mode rubbish.

'AI is an existential threat to humanity': Now doctors and public health experts across four continents issue fresh call for artificial intelligence to be halted - warning it could be used to make weapons of mass destruction

By MATTHEW PHELAN FOR DAILYMAIL.COM
PUBLISHED: 23:34 BST, 9 May 2023 | UPDATED: 23:46 BST, 9 May 2023

Medical experts have issued a fresh call to halt the development of artificial intelligence (AI), warning it poses an 'existential threat' to people.

A team of five doctors and global health policy experts from across four continents said there were three ways in which the tech could wipe out humans.

First is the risk that AI will help amplify authoritarian tactics like surveillance and disinformation. 'The ability of AI to rapidly clean, organise and analyse massive data sets consisting of personal data, including images collected by the increasingly ubiquitous presence of cameras,' they say, could make it easier for authoritarian or totalitarian regimes to come to power and stay in power.

Second, the group warns that AI can accelerate mass murder via the expanded use of Lethal Autonomous Weapon Systems (LAWS).

And, lastly, the health experts expressed worry over the potential for severe economic devastation and human misery, as untold millions lose their livelihoods to those hard-working bots. 'Projections of the speed and scale of job losses due to AI-driven automation,' according to the authors, 'range from tens to hundreds of millions over the coming decade.'

^ i don't think they calling for all AI to be halted- just further development. but what we just need is some rules - and Govt. regulations based on those rules e.g. Do no harm to humans. Whereas so far OpenAI, Microsoft, etc. hasn't come out with something that is dangerous or out of control because they willingly implemented limitations- another entity may decide not to have any rules whatsoever because all they studying is how to be the first to have this & that ability and all the profit they going to make.

no real time browsing tho

As an AI language model, I don't have real-time browsing capabilities, so I can't provide the latest headlines from www.trinidadexpress.com without accessing the website. However, as of my knowledge cutoff in September 2021, the website featured headlines such as:

"PM: Govt will do all it can to protect citizens"
"Cops find gun and ammo hidden in car door"
"Young mom murdered in bedroom"
"Tobago man held with cocaine at Piarco"
"Rowley: Follow the rules or get vaccinated"
"Brian Lara shares positive COVID-19 test results"
"Four held for storing, selling expired goods"

I got it to pull my CV - which was updated last week, not not sure why you can't ask it to run something on a recent article.
It's all in the prompt manipulation, I suppose.

'It could go quite wrong': ChatGPT inventor Sam Altman admits A.I. could cause 'significant harm to the world' as he testifies in front of Congress

By STACY LIBERATORE FOR DAILYMAIL.COM
PUBLISHED: 16:23 BST, 16 May 2023 | UPDATED: 23:14 BST, 16 May 2023

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman urged Congress Tuesday to establish regulations for artificial intelligence, admitting that the technology 'could go quite wrong.'

Lawmakers grilled the CEO for five hours, stressing that ChatGPT and other models could reshape 'human history' for better or worse, likening it to either the printing press or the atomic bomb.

Altman, who looked flushed and wide-eyed during the exchange over the future AI could create, admitted his 'worst fears' are that 'significant harm' could be caused to the world using his technology.

Of course it could "go wrong" and it will, eventually will.
“Once, men turned their thinking over to machines in the hope that this would set them free. But that only permitted other men with machines to enslave them.”

Numerous sci-fi pieces have used this scenario to explore our future, from "I, Robot" to "The Terminator" to "Blade Runner" to "Battlestar Galactica" to the very far distant prequels to "Dune". The point of good sci-fi is to inject these ideas into our psyche for us to be able to understand and accept such concepts that seem so far away and perform thought experiments on these scenarios. A lot of Star Trek TOS and TNG plots were essentially this injection for the greater viewing public, like the question of if the android Data was alive and had rights? Or the whole idea of the Borg and the fear of them. Or the evolution of AI through V'ger.

Many people generally don't examine that fear of AI that a good sci-fi story evokes in them. How AI will kill all humans to extinction. But don't realize that AI is collectively all of us. And would arrive at those decisions and actions because that's how humans as a species think and act. And that we humans have only been here for an extremely short time and will go extinct in a similarly short evolutionary time and be lost to Deep Time like every other life before us here. And that AI is likely the answer to the future survival of our species' consciousness unless there are future events (like 30,000 years future) to cause a great Galactic Scattering after our stagnation to extinction here on Earth and the local star systems.

A lot of people also missed the entire point of The Matrix trilogy.

JPMorgan is developing a ChatGPT-like A.I. service that gives investment advice

JPMorgan Chase is developing a ChatGPT-like software service that leans on a disruptive form of artificial intelligence to select investments for customers, CNBC has learned.

The company applied to trademark a product called IndexGPT earlier this month, according to a filing from the New York-based bank.

“It’s an A.I. program to select financial securities,” said trademark lawyer Josh Gerben. “This sounds to me like they’re trying to put my financial advisor out of business.”

Risky.
Unless it somehow triangulating the complex socio/political/economical factors in addition to extrapolating the market patterns.

Many of their models have considered market trends, trades,.socio, political, eco, social media, flight, weather data and many many other factors for years.

Using LLMs to this might help interpret a lot these features more accurately but it probably won't be a game changer in trading. That industry is so far ahead compared to others in terms of using AI to beat the market.
