After waiting months for the restoration of parts of Saddle Road in Santa Cruz, residents awoke this morning to find that the equipment being used to pave the road had been destroyed by fire in an apparent arson attack.
The equipment belonged to contractors Kallco Limited, which had begun paving the road just one day prior.
Santa Cruz police are trying to determine who is responsible for destroying two excavators, a steam roller and a road paver with a combined worth of well over $1 million.
One of two excavators that were destroyed early Thursday morning, parked in the carpark of the Roundabout Bar in Santa Cruz.
Two sections of the road were being paved - in front of Undercover Nurseries (which was fully paved on Wednesday) and near the Sam Boucaud Road (which was only partially paved by the end of work Wednesday).
The road paver and roller were left near the worksite at Sam Boucaud Road as workers had planned to resume paving Thursday morning.
The excavators were parked half a kilometre away in an open area on a lot containing the Roundabout Bar.
All of the equipment were rendered useless after the fires.
Residents have condemned the arson attack, particularly given that those portions of the roads had been needing repair for more than a year.
A steam roller that was set on fire, parked along San Antonio Avenue in Santa Cruz.
"Something good being done for the community and this is what u all do? Wow sad," one person commented on a Facebook post.
"After we complaining for so long about bad roads...someone would do this," another person added, with a third commenter saying, "This is such a terrible act! Why would you do that when that equipment is needed for the good of the community and elsewhere?"
Both sections of the roads had been badly damaged by torrential rainfall that resulted in floods and with the rainy season just beginning, contractors were seeking to complete the job.
Kallco and the regional corporation were not immediately able to provide comment.
Santa Cruz Police are continuing investigations.
