Much has been written about Russia’s economic reliance on oil and natural gas exports, but another mainstay of its economy is being destroyed in the Ukraine conflict: weapons. Russia is the world’s second largest exporter of weaponry in the world, after the United States, accounting for 20 percent of global arms sales and $15 billion per year in revenue. Yet this “resource” upon which the Russian economy partly relies is being destroyed each and every day in Ukraine. As of the end of April, Russia has lost more than 3,200 military vehicles and countless quantities of small arms and munitions.

Furthermore, Russia’s ability to “renew” this resource is being severely hampered by international sanctions. Prior to the war, the Russian arms industry produced around 250 tanks annually, meaning that Ukraine’s documented destruction of at least 500 tanks has already set back Russia’s military production by two years. However, Russia is no longer producing tanks at that level. As Western sanctions choke Russia’s access to high-tech components and other goods, auto manufacturing plants and other factories essential to military operations are closing down.

Despite some efforts in recent years at reshoring critical components of arms production, Russian weapons remain highly dependent on foreign technology. A recent examination of a crashed Russian cruise missile in Ukraine revealed that a huge proportion of critical components were manufactured abroad, including the U.S.- made circuit board that helps guide the missiles to their targets. Russia has found there is no easy substitution for the import process, which has caused delays in domestic projects and foreign sales, compounding productivity problems because of outdated plants and an aging workforce.

The failures of Russia’s equipment on the battlefield could have huge consequences for its economy. Between the brand damage of having its top products blown up in viral videos gleefully posted by Ukrainian drone operators, Russia will simply have a hard time filling orders while scrambling to replenish its own stocks. Russia’s traditional arms clients may turn to foreign competitors, or turn to domestic production, as India has recently canceling a $1 billion deal to purchase Russian helicopters.

Russia expects gross domestic product (GDP) to contract by 7.8% in 2022, Interfax news agency quoted the economy ministry as saying on Tuesday, as the commodity-dependent economy takes a hit from Western sanctions.

The economy ministry currently expects Russia's 2022 inflation at 17.5% and the rouble currency to peak in the second quarter of 2022 before it weakens to 76 roubles per dollar towards the end of 2022, Interfax added, citing the ministry.

Everyone is crying because of the higher prices for basics necessities as food and gas prices soars. Most of the people in the West who makes these policies or decisions do not have to burden themselves with the cost of basic items. They are filthy rich and do not have to ask "how much" or look at price tags when shopping. Because they have personal shoppers and unlimited access to cash.
How Europe was pushed towards economic suicide.
Michael Hudson wrote, "The only way left for U.S. diplomats to block European purchases is to goad Russia into a military response and then claim that avenging this response outweighs any purely national economic interest. As hawkish Under-Secretary of State for Political Affairs, Victoria Nuland, explained in a State Department press briefing on January 27: “If Russia invades Ukraine one way or another Nord Stream 2 will not move forward.”[1]The problem is to create a suitably offensive incident and depict Russia as the aggressor." Nuland expressed who was dictating the policies of NATO members succinctly in 2014: “F**k the EU.”

For having a middle power level Armed Forces as compared to the other global powers the Brits have some impressive tech which they have been providing Ukraine. The Starstreak MANPADS they sent are much more technologically advanced than the Strelas and Iglas and yesterday I saw a vid showing the first strikes of Brimstone missiles on Russian tanks.

Those Brimstones are really impressive stuff. "Fire and forget" missiles with ranges of 20kms+ in the V1 and 60kms+ in V2. They can be fired as a swarm and then communicate with each other in flight to independently strike multiple targets.

The EU plans a “massive” increase in solar and wind power, and a short-term boost for coal, to end its reliance on Russian oil and gas as fast as possible.

In a plan outlined on Wednesday, the European Commission said the EU needed to find an extra €210bn (£178bn) over the next five years to pay for phasing out Russian fossil fuels and speeding up the switch to green energy.

Senior officials conceded that in the short term, the race to get off Russian gas would mean burning more coal and nuclear energy. The plan, drawn up in response to the Kremlin-ordered invasion of Ukraine and subsequent soul-searching about Europe’s dependence on Russian gas, proposes upgrades to the EU green deal, the bloc’s flagship policy to confront the climate crisis.

The Commission proposed that 45% of the EU’s energy mix should come from renewables by 2030, an advance on the current 40% target suggested less than a year ago. Officials also want to cut energy consumption by 13% by 2030 (compared with 2020), in comparison with the current proposal of a 9% saving.

Russia brings out the new shiny toys. We have seen the use of hypersonic missiles and the smaller decoys that confuses the defense systems. On Wednesday Russia says it was using new laser weapons to burn up drones and some secret weapons to counter the flood of Western arms. In 2018 Russia unveiled an intercontinental ballistic missile, underwater nuclear drones, a supersonic weapon and a laser weapon.

That's a sign that they depleting their weapons cache.

That 40bn will be a big rock to crash against. They will have to micro manage their offensive to conserve and stretch their defensive capability in the medium term.

It is of little consequence.

During the Iraq War, the US introduced the M1 Abrams main battle tank. It's performance caused it to be a world favorite afterward.

Ukraine has been using the Turkish Bayraktar TB2 drone effectively to loiter aerial munitions for counterattack against Russia.

Russia is the number two arms manufacturer in the world and the number one supplier of arms in the Middle East. The Ukrainian incursion has provided many photos of Russian armor littering the battlefield. From what I have been hearing, the enthusiasm for Russian weapons is waning. Turkey, India, the US, and even Ukraine are seeing increases of purchases.

Putin is carrying out his stated narrative to obliterate Ukraine from off the face of the earth.

The regions Russia currently controls (since Feb. 2022) have been almost totally destroyed.

The region's they control are the Russian speaking ones and the ones they supposedly liberating.
Mariupol was 60-80% Russian speaking.

Zelensky admits that Ukraine is paying a heavy price in the Donbas
Up to 100 Ukrainian soldiers a day dead.
https://www.bloomberg.com/news/videos/2 ... openeurope

On the positive side the French Caesar self propelled canons are now in use (maybe the 2nd most advanced of such systems after the Swedish Archers) and Denmark today announced the donation of Harpoon anti ship missiles in land launched batteries. Usually announcements are made after the equipment is already in the country to negate any possible Russian action. This would allow for some maritime action. This is sorely needed because last week an announcement was made that the world has 10 weeks of grain in storage.

Give up the eastern regions as they were and are pro Russian, promise not to join or host nato, and Russia will cease.

That 40bn from US is not gifts, those are loans, and Ukraine will be indebted in the aftermath.

Since 2014 there was civil war in the eastern regions, with shelling going on too,... They are not Ukraine.
