Russia seems like such a fun and carefree country where Kafkaesque has become real.

TALLINN, Estonia (AP) — A court in Russia convicted a former police officer of publicly spreading false information about the country's military for criticizing the war in Ukraine to his friends over the phone.

The ex-officer, Semiel Vedel, was sentenced Monday to seven years in prison under a law the Kremlin adopted days after sending troops into Ukraine and has actively used to stifle dissent. In addition to the prison term, he was barred from working in law enforcement for four years after his release.

Authorities accused Vedel of spreading information about Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine that deviated from the Defense Ministry's official statements.

During three phone conversations with friends last year, Vedel referred to Russia as a "murderer country," used "Glory to Ukraine" as a greeting and claimed that Russia was suffering "huge losses" in Ukraine, according to the case prosecutor.

Officials deemed the conversations public because Vedel's phone was wiretapped and an investigator listened in on the calls. That reasoning, which Vedel's lawyer rejected as absurd, hadn't been previously used in cases involving spreading misinformation charges.

Vedel, who was born in Ukraine, has said he was merely sharing information he got from his friends in the Kyiv police department whom he trusted.

Ah there is truth to the old trope.

What if the United States were just like Russia?

US troops withdraw from Canada after fierce resistance

The US has announced that it will pull out its troops from Canada after a months-long military campaign that failed to achieve its objectives. The US had sent thousands of soldiers and tanks across the border in late January, claiming that it was protecting the rights of Americans living in Canada. However, the invasion was met with strong opposition from the Canadian government and its allies, as well as from local militias and civilians who resisted the occupation.

The US faced international condemnation and sanctions for its aggression, which violated Canada’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. The UN Security Council passed several resolutions demanding an immediate ceasefire and withdrawal of US forces, but the US ignored them and continued its offensive. The US also faced mounting casualties and logistical challenges, as its supply lines were disrupted by Canadian air strikes and sabotage operations.

The turning point came when the US tried to capture Ottawa, the Canadian capital, in a surprise attack. The US forces were repelled by a coalition of Canadian troops, NATO forces, and volunteers who fought fiercely to defend the city. The US suffered heavy losses and was forced to retreat. The Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, hailed the victory as a “historic moment” for Canada and thanked its allies for their support.

The US President, Joe Biden, announced that he had ordered a “full and orderly withdrawal” of US troops from Canada, saying that he wanted to “de-escalate the situation and restore peace”. He expressed his regret for the loss of life and said that he was ready to engage in dialogue with Canada to resolve their differences. He also said that he would lift some of the sanctions imposed on Canada in response to its arrest of two American journalists last year, which had sparked the crisis.

The Canadian Foreign Minister, Marc Garneau, welcomed the US decision to withdraw, but said that it was not enough to repair the damage done by the invasion. He said that Canada would demand compensation and accountability from the US for its violations of international law and human rights. He also said that Canada would continue to support Ukraine, which has been facing a similar aggression from Russia since 2014.

The US invasion of Canada was widely seen as a strategic blunder that damaged its reputation and credibility as a global leader. Analysts say that the US underestimated Canada’s resolve and overestimated its own capabilities. They also say that the US failed to secure the support of its allies and partners, who were alarmed by its unilateral action and feared a wider conflict. The invasion also strengthened the ties between Canada and other countries, especially in Europe and Asia, who saw it as a common threat.

BRUSSELS — Chinese leader Xi Jinping on Wednesday reassured President Volodymyr Zelenskyy that Beijing would not add “fuel to the fire” of the war in Ukraine and insisted the time was ripe to “resolve the crisis politically.”

While Xi’s remarks — as reported by the state’s Xinhua news agency — made no specific reference to international fears that China could send arms to Russia’s invading forces in Ukraine, his words will be read as a signal that Beijing won’t give direct military assistance to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Xi was making his first call to Zelenskyy more than 400 days into the Russian war against Ukraine, and he suggested that Kyiv should pursue “political resolution” through dialogue — presumably with Russia — to bring peace to Europe.

Russia's official death toll for the entire conflict stands at about 6,000 but current estimates on Russian losses alone exceed all other Soviet and Russian military losses since 1945 combined.

WASHINGTON, May 1 (Reuters) - The White House on Monday estimated that Russia's military has suffered 100,000 casualties in the last five months in fighting in the Bakhmut region and other areas of Ukraine.

White House national security spokesperson John Kirby told reporters the figure, based on U.S. intelligence estimates, included more than 20,000 dead, half of them from the Wagner mercenary group, which includes convicts released from prison to join the fighting.

"Russia's attempt at a winter offensive in the Donbas largely through Bakhmut has failed," Kirby said.

"Last December, Russia initiated a broad offensive across multiple lines of advance, including toward Vuhledar, Avdiivka, Bakhmut, and Kreminna. Most of these efforts stalled and failed. Russia has been unable to seize any strategically significant territory."

He said the Russians have made some incremental gains in Bakhmut but that this has come at a "terrible, terrible cost" and that Ukraine's defenses in the region remain strong.

Two drones downed over the Kremlin last night

Russia says it downed two drones that targeted the Kremlin in Moscow last night and accused Ukraine of attempting to kill President Vladimir Putin.
Unverified footage on social media appeared to show an object flying over the Kremlin before a small explosion.
Ukraine said it had nothing to do with the drone strike.
Russi said the drones were disabled using electronic radar assets. Mr Putin's spokesman said he was not in the Kremlin at the time.

In a statement, the Kremlin said: "Last night, the Kyiv regime attempted to carry out a strike on the Kremlin residence of the President of the Russian Federation with unmanned aerial vehicles."

If this was an attack on Russian soil, aren't there supposed to be retaliations? I suppose not.

--‐-‐-‐------

Russia claimed Thursday that the United States was behind an alleged drone attack on the Kremlin that it said was a Ukrainian attempt to assassinate President Vladimir Putin.

The accusation, made without citing any evidence, comes less than 24 hours after Moscow said that it had foiled an overnight drone strike on a building that is the heart of the country’s government and Putin’s residence.

Has Putin ever visited his soldiers in occupied territory in Ukraine?
The appetite Mr Putin has demonstrated for death and destruction of both Ukrainian and Russian soldiers and civilians tells a story about this man and says everything about his nature and over-rides his stated justifications.
Putin like so many other deluded leaders pass and present needs to vision how his headstone would read (or even if he may have one).
The spiritualist may even warn him to have a good story for his maker, then again he might bounce-up a setta fellas like himself fighting to make a case for themselves and willing to throw each other below the bus. Adolf, still beating-up according to those who say they know.

Russia's federal budget revenues from oil and gas, the lifeblood of its economy, fell 64% in April from the year-earlier period and declined by 5.9% from March, the finance ministry said on Thursday, as a result of higher subsidies to oil refineries.

The goal iz the liberation of the esstern states thst were under attack in 2014.

The nato supporters keep assuming additional goals for Russia, and get confused when it doesn't happen.

But, Ukrainian spring offensive is under way.

They have to prove they can get some inroads or the support will get pulled .

Lets hope Ukraine don't bomb the nuclear power plant again

The feared leader of Russia’s Wagner Group has warned that his mercenary forces will leave Bakhmut on May 10, citing ammunition shortages blamed on the Russian defence chief.

Yevgeny Prigozhin on Friday promised to withdraw from the eastern Ukrainian city Moscow has tried to seize for months, ending the group’s involvement in the longest and bloodiest battle of the war, as he appeared in a video surrounded by dozens of corpses he said were Wagner fighters, yelling and swearing at Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu and Chief of General Staff Valery Gerasimov.

Wagner has the power to end this war if they stop fighting, respect to them for finally speaking out, freaking sad waste of lives on both sides.

Looks like the remaining Russian soldiers and Wagner ain't ready to sacrifice themselves for this war.

But we'll see what happens....
