zwift cycling here, I used to run a few times per week outside, but for some reason can't handle a treadmill. The setups should be similar.

Distance is logged on app via the smart device or hardware (power meter, cadence sensor, etc). GPS won't work because true distance is always zero. It depends on the quality of your setup and calibration, but I'm running a Saris trainer and I've found that it's fairly accurate in terms of my other rides IRL.

I think it's even harder than real life because I can't "coast" as much as I do on long rides.

The one thing I miss is my HR data on my watch on the app while I train, but I need a dongle for that that I not feeing to spring 50USD for atm.

Makes sense, I have a cheap hewawi watch that I use when out and about doing excercise and I get pretty good information back once I have my phone on me. During lockdown V1 when I took to rowing on a machine at home it was useless other than logging heart rate and breathing/lung capacity.

Now when I go out kayaking in real the only use is distance traveled- I ok with that though.

Sorry to OP, I completely missed the question no I dont use Zwift and Strava isn't a friend of mine either

Another note I don't cycle as I ill probably get run over

most likely will need some sort of power meter. For running, can use Stryd

for cycling

a budget reasonable option is to use a hr meter as a power meter

If you can download HR data and ride data...use Golden Cheetah (free/legally) to pair the data
