Using a proxy? Choose the best DNS for you

Postby VexXx Dogg » June 21st, 2021, 2:43 pm

So I'm just sharing a solution I wrote to address issue that I found when using a proxy/dns service like smartdnsproxy.

They give you a list of proxy servers that can be used: https://support.smartdnsproxy.com/artic ... march-2020

How can you tell which is the best one for you? Geographic distance? short ping? Do you want to manually ping all in the list? How you know which ones are dead?

I know there may be tools out there like NameBench etc, but I just wanted to check a list of IPs that I defined.

This is a shell script that can run on Mac or Linux (need to test on the Windows / Linux based shell)

It's as easy as adding all the IPs you want to check in the supplied address.txt file and running the shell script.
The top 3 are listed for you to set on your router.

Try it out, give some feedback.
It's provided as is and the code is there to make sure you can check that no nefarious commands are being run.

Nice!
I see the sample txt had two IPs from California
You getting better performance with those?
I've been using smartdnsproxy for years now but I've been using Miami and Brazil servers for proximity

nah, I just plugged a couple random ones in.

Here's some output I just ran with the full list of 39 from smartdnsproxy

------Results------
Top 3 servers with lowest ping time (milliseconds):

149.28.105.215 63.874
23.21.43.50 89.881
169.53.235.135 93.134

Servers with highest ping time (milliseconds):
35.154.249.83 406.757
223.165.64.97 415.268
54.66.128.66 431.762

Servers that are down or unreachable:

168.1.79.238
-------------------
Script runtime: 143 seconds.

The one in bold is Miami
for some strange reason I'm getting 100% packet loss on Brazil 54.94.226.225
let me know what you are getting for brazil

Just tested brazil directly
between 170 ms and 190 ms consistently. I had some random packet drops from brazil over time as well, which is one of the reasons I wrote this. I stopped using it in my config.

Dunno if their infrastructure is weak or there are other connectivity issues at play.

Miami and N Virigina have been consistently top 2 in dozens of tests over the last few days.

Any reason you chose smartdnsproxy over the others?

about 4-5 years ago they had a christmas deal for 25USD for 2 years (about 1 dollar a month), and they kept renewing me at that rate. That was the only reason I signed up, and don't need to change because it works flawlessly 99.X% of the time.

1, Subscribe to the smartdnsproxy service.
2. Use the IPs in the list provided by smartdnsproxy on your flow router config (Look for DNS override in the LAN settings page)
3. "Enable" your flow IP from the smartdns website - pretty straightforward once you're logged in.

My tool helps you choose the best three from the list provided based on your location.

Should apply to all devices on the WIFI.

That sounds like a handy script for optimizing your proxy setup, just what I need now! I've personally found that geographic distance and ping can make a big difference in performance. Testing IPs manually might be a bit tedious, but it's great to have a tailored solution like this.

I first went with NordVPN, which cost me more than I expected, around $11.95 a month. It often felt slow during busy times like evenings, which was frustrating. The price didn't match the performance for me.

So, I switched to a proxy service. It's much more affordable; I buy proxy for $1.4. The speed is pretty good, and I've had a smooth experience. It's simpler than NordVPN, but it works fine for everyday stuff like web surfing and watching videos. Plus, the money I'm saving is a big plus.
