Wash as often as your hair.
Don't use products, or if you feel you have to, very light ones.
Don't comb with anything but fingers, well not if your going for the Viking look
Always eat with napkins, or paper towels, though a full beard is a good way to save some food for later.
Buy a proper hair/beard trimmer and learn to maintain whatever look you're going for.
