Seems like they need to clearly define this.
Fire sticks also provide access via legit subscription means.

New legislation on illegal streaming devices in Trinidad & Tobago

Postby Duane 3NE 2NR » May 17th, 2021, 9:48 am

They are referring to any device or software that is used to access pirated software. Not just android boxes or fire sticks.

You can use a car legally and illegally. They are cracking down on the illegal use of streaming devices.

So basically just a BS announcement then? the issue is how they going to prove it - unless of course they setup sting ops to catch the small fish who building/modding sheit

Then the workaround is to sell a legal device, and give some "helpful instructions" for free.

^ well often times these devices are advertised and sold as part of an IPTV or movie streaming solution - like "3500 free cable channels" or "Watch all the latest movies" - both of which feature pirated content.

You can legally use an Android box or FireStick to watch Netflix or Hulu with your paid subscription. That is not what they are after.

they would need to examine the software installed on it to determine if it illegal, not so? it's not the hardware, but the software installed on it that makes it illegal. i can install mobdro (when it was still working) on my phone - it doesn't make my phone illegal

Nothing wrong with that; you just have to enjoy basic stations en Español and pay a crown to the cable provider :? .

TATT can only stop the people who sell the Fire Stick with the apps preloaded. Most of these people are on FB marketplaces etc.

A lot of these crackdowns have to do with our membership of the Caribbean Basin Initiative, the unilateral trade agreement with the USA that Caribbean countries can utilize to export into the US basically duty free.

In the review of the CBI initiative the US highlights areas where they want the benefiting country to make changes and I know a few years ago Trinidad was bought up for IP infringement specifically cable TV.

As the largest benefiting country of the CBI by value it is in Trinidad's benefit to play ball r.e. TATT clampdowns.

Shouldn't it be that the apps are illegal and not the boxes or sticks? I can use the box or app to install Netfilx, HBO max or Disney+, pay my subscription and connect it to my regular TV for viewing.

x2. Depending on the site, you don't get any pop-ups or in some cases, none at all.
