X2. Really nice spread bro. First grade crops or not, anything you grow yourself automatically tastes better/different than what you would normally purchase. You eating real good there!

carluva wrote:There is an empty lot of land behind my house. I tried planting bigan, ochro, tomato and pepper last lockdown but that didn't turn out to well as the plants didn't bear and eventually died.

Wifey and father in law said I needed to dig drainage trenches between the rows of plants and mould up the base of each plant, which I didn't.

Is that necessary when planting those type of plants or can those plants simply be planted straight in the ground and left to grow?

Is it also necessary to fertilize or can more natural growth enhancers such as manure be used?

What about natural pesticides? Any recommendations for natural neem pesticides as I have a big neem tree in the yard?

I have had good results without moulding or even doing drainage trenches. The land topography will factor in here. Manure is a good start and almost always a must unless you have really rich soil. You can take it from there based on the production wrt fertilizers. Good ole Blaukorn can work for a kitchen garden.

I would boil the neem leaves and seeds if you have (I think the chemical from the seed is more potent). I sometimes add to that garlic, crushed peppers or powder, strain the mixture and spray.

No one set particular place as I've bought seedlings from a few Agri shops. Asasco and Hare Krishna in Aranguez and Asasco in Cunupia. Most recent purchase was from RoRo Nurseries in Jerningham.

Carluva- adding to Soul Collecter.

This is my approach to those types of crops in the ground.Cannabis is similar so take notes, whoever wants to plant weed in the ground.

Dig holes about 3 feet.Fill about a foot with large gravel. This will drain your roots somewhat. The remainder, you mixing dried cow manure with sharp sand in equal parts and fill to the top.Plant your plants and add a layer of mulch about an inch above the soil line.

Now if the land is waterlogged,You definitely need drains.

Thanks guys.

Much appreciated.

On a related note, any recommendations for a good soil mix for flower beds? I have several beds around the yard that I did last year but I need to put some good, well draining and loose soil in the beds to get the flower and plants to succeed. I had many casualties in the last year

Any tried and tested mixes that work for you guys? I'll need about two cubic metres for the most.

This is a cool concept , lot of potential for a great looking terrarium.
Forgot to post some stuff i harvested in my media bed, i mainly go for root crops and fruits, energy dense items. But i tried turmeric recently in a flood and drain system and was pleasantly surprised how well it produced.

Real nice tumeric.

What will you do with all that though?

I mean, it's not so many things tumeric can be used for.

Although I was suffering from severe congestion a few years ago and twice a day, I drank a concoction of tumeric, honey, lime juice, cinnamon and black pepper. That worked like a charm and cleared me up good after two days.

I make a drink with turmeric, ginger cumin and milk. It's called hardi or karha, it's good for women in particular but I like it and its anti inflammatory. I made a short vid on it a while back actually.

Yes. I know about Hardi drink. It's a good cleanse and detox for the system but I understand it's not something to drink too much of.

Daxtor , I forgot to ask, what strain you have there?

If you think hardi good for inflammation, wait until you drink some Cannabis Tea.Arthritis will pack up and run.

Same as far as I know. I was drinking that a few times a week after the head on collision we were in. It tasted pretty good. Nice haul of turmeric btw meccalli. We had a little patch but harvested a couple months ago and gave away most.

Was looking a while back and only getting fresh chicken manure, no one had any cow manure at all. I was lucky enough to score some properly cured chicken manure mixed with sand from a farmer who gave me a bligh.

I think some people use goat and rabbit manure with good results but never tried myself. May be a bit easier to source.

Yeah rabbit manure is really good, you can apply it directly without worrying about burning.

What are any of your thoughts on these hydroponics systems?

For a family, would you say that the smaller units are suitable and would give a return on investment?

https://www.greenagefarms.com/

Have a look at the catalogue on their website with prices and systems.

Their Facebook page is also quite populous with some good customer reviews and experiences.

I called them today and the largest plants that can be grown in their "smart farm" system are pepper and tomato.

Thoughts?

ROI will be there eventually, you can shorten that time by building a system for yourself and saving alot of money. Stacky pots are pretty expensive but they are great quality and do last if you want to go vertical. But in terms of hydroponics, drip to waste systems are pretty easy to run as opposed to a recirculating system. Cocopeat works as a great medium, you could experiment with a small system and go from there. For a basic drip to waste system, you can use 4 inch pipes cut in half longitudinally as troughs, fill with cocopeat as your growing medium. A nutrient tank, submersible pump, timer and some pipes and hose for the plumbing. There's a lot of nutrient mixes on the market that are good for various things, just mix and when it's finished or after harvest. Flush with freshwater and mix again. If you want to do tree crops like eggplant, tomatoes etc, dutch buckets are more suitable.
