Advice needed: Vehicle has limited steering lock on either side.

Postby newto4x4 » December 3rd, 2020, 2:40 pm

So I just bought this Hilux. On the right side had plenty lock and the left side had a little.
Took it to the mechanic and now both sides have little lock. He is saying that it is the tyres, too big, but the tyres not touching anything. Any advice?
Thanks.

Note there is a physical nut that is adjusted to limit the locking to prevent the tyres touching the fenders.

You can adjust this yourself confirming the tyres are not touching the fenders.

Also check the amount of threads exposed from the steering ends. A big variation means a steering rack was replaced by an incompetent mechanic and would cause the issue.

All Vehicles should have these , in your vehicle as mentioned this could be your issue

Someone may having replaced your rack ends or inner ends with a shorter replacements, due to worn ends needing replacement and could put their hands on the proper part.
Measure the lengths of the left and right rack-ends, a proper alignment shop should be able to put you on the right 'track'.

I can't picture how shorter rack ends could be the cause of the op problem. Installing shorter ends would definitely affect the toe on the vehicle (I think it will toe in on a Hilux). If I'm not mistaken the turn stops are on the rack ends themselves. The problem has to be something different.

One I can understand. Two approaches physical constraints
