Padarath: Govt's plan spells beginning of end for WASA workers

The Member of Parliament for Princes Town Barry Padarath.

ANISTO ALVES

Powered by
Princes Town MP, Barry Padarath, the Opposition Shadow Minister for Public Utilities has slammed Minister Marvin Gonzales for what he calls "the government's callous and haphazard approach to dealing with the woes at WASA".

Padarath stated that instead of dealing frontally with the challenges the Government created at WASA, "the Minister instead spent most of his time looking in the rearview mirror in an attempt to mask his incompetence".

He said in a media release that "the firing" of 213 managers at WASA was the beginning of the end for WASA employees.

He added that major layoffs would happen at WASA over the next few months since the government has spent seven years driving the company into the ground and demonizing employees.

MP Padarath argued that the Opposition had been warning employees and stakeholders at the Public Utilities companies about the government's wicked and cruel intentions to put them on the breadline and privatize the sector.

"Every day that goes by, we are seeing the government inching closer and closer to realizing their plan."

He questioned why the government needed almost seven years to decide that they would employ the use of technology in the production of water.

He also questioned why is it taking over seven years for the government to address the issue of aging infrastructure, dilapidated mains and pipelines that result in major leakages.

Padarath argued that the announcements made by Gonzales at today's press conference were "full of sound bytes but will result in no action".

He reminded the population that the same Minister made announcements of an improvement in the water distribution across the country and instead it got worse.

The Princes Town MP said the press conference held by Minister Gonzales today was really the preamble to axing thousands of WASA employees and very little to do with transforming the sector.

He called on the Minister to publish the areas of the country that receive a 24-hour, seven days a week supply of water that he spoke about today, since that is not a fact but rather a fallacy.

Last time I checked both parties are responsible for the present situation WASA is in . 5000 workers with 426 managers with no equitable return.

Those with meters, observed a change in rates? I'm thinking it went from $1.75 to $3 per cubic m. Have a look at the respective bills

As much as I despise PNM with a passion. This is not about people going home this about addressing the country water issues .People have been complaining of not getting water in their taps for a long time now and as I see it someone is trying to do something about it. Imagine ppl in this country paying their water bill religiously and only receiving water supply once or twice for the week, how in God's green earth is that fair?

President of the Public Service Association, Leroy Baptiste, has told WASA that it is time to review how much people pay for water if it really wants to turn around the fortunes of the company...

Time the government runs their businesses like a real business and not a parlor.

I totally agree. Cut out unnecessary costs and personnel. Ensure value for money. Compensation based on productivity.

Gonzales: Be grateful for access to public utilities

Gonzales said, “We hear so much negativity, (but) as citizens we ought to be grateful for the kind of intervention we have taken over the years to improve the lives of people, because in many countries they don’t have access to these social services and programmes.”

In other words, be grateful for a service you are paying for, PNM logic

Gonzalez is one of the bigger failures of a Minister. Man consistently puts his foot in his mouth.
Didn't Rowley himself get vex when people make comparisons of TT to other countries?

Rowley said at least we better than Haiti and said we should be thankful for small mercies, a step up from dog sheit. This is probably their mentality of us just now they will say at least we better than Africa (Ethiopia etc)

Waterpark, swimming pools in the PM's own constituency,Blue waters, etc.
People seeing through the favouritism
And it is a known fact that nobody wastes more water than wasa itself, unless they planning on metering leaks.
I wish more people would sue wasa for vehicular damage as well.

Ring it up as another L for the taxpayers I guess. Hope they know with this loan bears interest and the only way to facilitate such high interest rates would mean incremental to drastic increases to everyone water bill
