Boy, 11, dies after TV spat with parents

AN 11-year-old boy is suspected to have died by suicide at his home in Couva on Monday night.

The child was taken to the hospital by his father, but he doctors were unable to revive him.

The boy was a fourth standard primary school pupil.

Police were told by the child’s parents that he was watching television on Monday night when they told him to go to bed because he had to attend school the next day.

The parents said that he became angry and went into his bedroom.

A short while later his father checked the bedroom, and found his son with a cord around the neck.

The father took his son to the Couva District Health Facility where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Cpl Baboolal of the Couva CID and other police officers responded and interviewed the distraught parents.

Detectives of Homicide Region III and Child Protection Unit were also expected to interview the parents and relatives.

An autopsy was expected to be performed on Tuesday.

Deep " issues " with family always end with extreme consequences ..

Parents have to be more tolerant .. and must seek professional advice ..

But if parents do not care or not financially able .. the State should intervene ..

But under PNM the death rate will get higher due to no care attitude for the future generation ..

parents probably feeling the stress of SEA, so want the get the child to study more. from the child perspective, is more pain and suffering followed by more pain and suffering if/when he fails SEA.

its always important children know there is a "plan b" if things don't go according to plan. dropping out of school is not so bad. plenty people did not go to school and drive Prado in this country.

May not be the case Spann. Some of those kids in extra lessons 5-days a week from Standard 4. Is real pressure knowing that you have to score 98% to get into your first choice of secondary school. Thank goodness my kids didn’t have to deal with that stress.

std 4 students in February have about 1 year before they write exam. now is when the pressure kick in to "buck up". making the children stop out tv, internet, etc,

Std 5 is just to do past papers and revise. The exam is at the end of March - they don't get the whole of Std 5.
Lessons starts from 3rd term in Std 3.

My neighbor kid has ADHD always saying he "kill" him self because the mom takes away his laptop playing roblox, how Trinidad deal with kids with ADHD , or is just saying children is "harden" they don't listen to the parents , maybe this kid had ADHD , i think alot of kids in Trinidad has ADHD and by giving them a good cuta$$ not the solution , but treatment .

@ Duane .I thought was the sea exams he was talking about and I know that is 11 plus so I know is not exam time. Parents have to be real harsh to push a child like that , if that is really the case, but some children these days entitled and spoilt and will retaliate (sometimes stupidly) when they don’t get their own way. The article says they wanted him to turn off the TV and go to bed , so I doubt it was study time. All in all he was not taught how to deal with problems in the correct way.

Kids are so impressionable and it's important that we sow good strong seeds in their mind for the betterment of society
