Pm defends cuffy 2.49 million dollars medical bills

Paying the million-dollar medical bill for Government Minister Maxie Cuffie was the right thing to do, said Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley as he reminded the nation of a former People's National Movement (PNM) candidate, Winston Ali, who poisoned himself and his family in frustration after being unable to survive post-general election.

Last week, Rowley, in response to a question in the Parliament, said Cuffie's medical treatment and recovery has cost the Trinidad and Tobago taxpayers $2.49 million.

Speaking at a public meeting at La Horquetta Regional Complex last Thursday night, Rowley recalled that, in 1991, Ali contested the Caroni Central seat for the PNM and, although he did well, he lost.

Ali, he said, was an accountant and gave up his profession to run for office but even though the PNM won he was not hired because of fear of what the opposition would say.

“We got into government and Winston Ali, a former PNM candidate, was out there looking for a job and all the PNM government and PNM MPs were afraid to find a job for Winston Ali because they were afraid of what the opposition would say, that we give a PNM candidate a job,” said Rowley.

Rowley said months passed and Ali was knocking from “pillar to post” trying to find a job to maintain his two small children.

“In a fit of hopelessness, Winston Ali poisoned his two children and his wife and himself...he left this earth, took with him his two children and his wife and you know what the opposition said to us then, 'allyuh use the man and when he wanted a job allyuh didn't give him a job',” he said.

Rowley said it was fear of the opposition that the PNM ministers did not employ Ali and if they did “his children today might have been alive”.

“When the news came to me about what happened to Winston and his family, I took a decision that day that I will always do what I believe is right and I don't care who says what and that is why I had no difficulty when the time came for the Government, which was served by a minister, when the Government could have assisted to save his life and to give him a quality of life if he succeeds that the people of Trinidad and Tobago, grateful people that we are, would help Maxie Cuffie and his family to survive,” he said.

Rowley said, hopefully, Cuffie recovers where he can endure a “rigorous job” which comes with being a minister.

Cuffie is currently in the United States recovering from a stroke he suffered last September.

Planning Minister Camille Robinson-Regis said Cuffie hopes to return to Trinidad for Easter in April.

So, he's important enough to spend ^2 million of taxpayers dollars on, but not so important that his family (or better yet his fellow peeonem colleagues) should help pay for his medical expenses. Local private institutions couldn't help him because he is the only person in this place that ever had a stroke & they have no experience treating the condition?

For all the ole talk, why is it taxpayers have to foot the bill for politicians private overseas hospital healthcare? They so big they don't need health insurance that they themselves should pay for out of pocket?
