Solar Eclipse 2017

Postby The Paleontologist » August 11th, 2017, 10:51 pm

Anyone knows where I can get solar glasses to buy locally? Want a pair to view the partial solar eclipse.
Thanks

#14 Welder's glass can be used to briefly look at it directly for a few seconds at a time. That's recommended by NASA. Check out a good hardware and make sure it's #14. I have used it to safely observe a partial eclipse way back in 2005.

What's not safe is medical x-ray film, undeveloped film, smoked glass, or even regular photographic filters... and a lot of people use that stuff.

Remember never, ever look at the sun directly without proper eye protection, even during an eclipse. It will literally burn a hole in your macula which cannot be restored.

Will we even be in the penumbra?

Yes! There should be something visible from Trinidad at the right time. About 1600hrs local time.

I already bought my solar glasses.....Intend to see this total eclipse personally.

From Trinidad you will see 60% of the sun covered

It's probably just semantics, but you will not see the total eclipse if you are in Trinidad. You will see a partial eclipse here. T&T is in the penumbra, so light levels will dim, but it won't go completely dark.

according to NASA you can use welding glass of rating 12 and up to view the eclipse, I got some #12 in a hardware for 15 (it's the replacement for a welding mask)

I think the glasses will be provided during the viewing. Afaik, the event is free and open to the public. Their email address is uwistargazers@gmail.com or you could check with them on Facebook for more info.

they sell the glass alone, it is actually a replacement for the glass in a welder's mask
