Volunteering

Postby Emmar01 » May 29th, 2017, 6:11 pm

Well my boss just dropped it on us that from June we are going to be working 3 days a week to keep overheads down.

Since I'm accustomed to being occupied during the week, does anyone know of any organisations that might need volunteers? My free days would be Thursday or Friday. Central or South better for me.

Volunteering is always nice but what I would suggest is that you use that time to develop yourself further. If possible, do a little short course or even get a second job. Focus on YOU for the time being. As your employer has shifted to less working hours that means that retrenchment might be around the corner. There will always be time to volunteer. Trust me

I will be following this trend. I like your trend of thought and something that has always been on my to do list.

Also consider starting a little business/trade of your own as you have the time. At the very least it'll be a good learning experience and at best a worthwhile investment especially if things continue to go south.

u can also try calling the salvation army (they feed a lot of homeless ppl plus do a lot of other work) & Is there not a cause; they help a lot of poor ppl locally and in the Caribbean. sometimes they need help with stuff as easy as packing a container with stuff ppl donated to send to Haiti.

OK guys, so here's an update. In one word - disappointed. I made contact with three charitable organisations - ALTA, Habitat for Humanity, and the Red Cross.

ALTA sent me some information on how to become a tutor which is pretty extensive but I just missed the current intake. No biggie on my part but they also told me that in the interim I could assist with their reading circles at various locations. Since Chaguanas is the closest to me, I called their Chaguanas branch where the co-ordinator said he would check to see whether they needed additional people and return my call. I'm still waiting for that return call .
Habitat for Humanity took my number, passed it on to their local country manager, to whom I spoke subsequently. She also advised that she would return my call to discuss further, and I'm still waiting for THAT call as well.
I called the Red Cross POS branch and left a detailed voice mail on their answering service, and I'm still waiting for them to return or acknowledge that call.

So that's it in a nutshell - note that all of this happened over 2-3 weeks ago. Call me cold but I don't believe that I should be running down charitable organisations to offer my voluntary services when they have every opportunity to encourage and welcome volunteers. I don't really buy the line of reasoning that I should keep trying if I've done what I can do to try to assist in whatever small way I can - I also think its a Trini malaise that is endemic about not following up on calls and taking things too lightly.

Having said that, I'm going to stick with a charity that I've assisted over the years, Animals Alive, since they always at least acknowledge and welcome my donations and never say no to any voluntary assistance that can be provided.

Trini have some real "fake people" in those organizations.

They are charity - but somehow think of them selves as doing YOU a favor - the volunteer.

They have become an "Elitist" group .

You see this Elitism attitude and its is becoming quite popular.

You should write a letter - send it to the " top honcho " and see that happens.

Or try to give them MONEY and see how they will call back in a hurry !

At times I think that charity in Trinidad and Tobago is simply an institution for the upperclass of society to show that they care.....

Don't get me wrong I'm all for it but sometimes.......

I guess when all your needs are met......what next??

ROU does a soup kitchen for homeless persons every Thursday, and every month or two (apart from during Ramadan which is every weekend) do something called 'feed the needy' programmes where they distribute clothes/food hampers and do medical screening for impoverished communities. They've also started building small homes or aiding in renovations when they can I believe (for those that cannot afford).
If you're interested in joining, feel free to PM me and i'll put you onto the respective persons. Any assistance is usually welcomed - all that is asked is that you come with good intentions, i.e. to help those that need it the most.

I agree. They dont welcome people into the groups unless you are in their circles.

Another way is to start a small charity / sharing on/of your own.

I am involved with a group of people where we cook and package a meal .

It is simple food. But a good nutrition and healthy meal .

The meals cost less than $15 with a drink .

If I am busy on such an event I donate the raw materials or give some cash.

You would be surprise to see how you bring a smile to the impoverished .

I hope you don't spit in the meals if they are given to "ghetto types" who don't say thank you.

No. So you not have to worry . The food is of the highest standard .

These people are not the "ghetto types" you see in the expensive restaurants , talking loud and
ranking - with all the gold chains - loud face and lip make-up - MK watches etc.

Then refuse to pay a tip or pay their bill - or leave a clean rest room.

No these are not the "ghetto type" that walk into a KFC and rob the cashier .

These are not the "ghetto types" with the lifestyle they cannot afford.

So rest assured - Sahena / bara breath :D
