TCL to close packaging division in February

Image

FIFTY more workers may be put on the breadline, as Trinidad Cement Ltd has given notice of its intention to permanently close its packaging division – TCL Packaging Ltd (TPL).

Chief labour relations officerof the Oilfield Workers’ Trade Union (OWTU) Lyndon Mendoza confirmed the closure is scheduled for February 15.

He said the union was informed of this development in a letter from the company on January 21. TCL has also invited the union to a meeting to discuss the closure.

Earlier this month, the company advised the union of the retrenchment of 12 workers, in spite of talks which had been going on since September last year. At that time Mendoza condemned the action as “union-busting.”

TPL was established in 1989 by TCL, which the government bought in July 1976 from the British firm Rugby Portland.

Rugby Portland first established the plant in 1954.

TPL also has contracts with NFM and a guyanese sugar company...the truth is other countries can manufacture these things at fraction of the cost even when you factor in shipping.

Some 200 DirecOne workers are now said to be facing the breadline following a decision by the majority State-owned Telecommunications Services of Trinidad and Tobago (TSTT) to end its contract with the company for the supply of call centre services.

The situation, however, is not expected to adversely impact TSTT’s customers significantly, as a new service provider is already being contracted.

Guardian Media has been told that the new call centre provider will be Call Serv Ltd.

DirecOne’s contract officially ended yesterday, the last day of TSTT’s financial year.

As a result, the hotline 824-TSTT is expected to be unavailable to customers from midnight to around 8 am today.

DirecOne handled all of TSTT’s call centre services, including its Help Desk for mobile, landline and internet services.

Several of DirecOne’s customer sales and service specialists have already received termination letters following the end of the contract with TSTT.

A release from TSTT last night confirmed that it had enlisted the services of new providers to support its contact centre operations.

“Nothing changes, TSTT’s contact centre will be fully resourced and customers will experience no difference in operations. 824-TSTT is an important customer touchpoint that the company intends to maintain,” TSTT stated.

“TSTT gives its assurance that customers will still be able to call 824-TSTT for information on products and services, technical support, bill related queries and the full range of services previously provided.”

TSTT is jointly owned by National Enterprises Ltd, which in turn is majority-owned by the Government and Cable & Wireless (West Indies) Ltd (C&W). NEL owns 51 per cent of TSTT’s issued share capital, while C&W holds 49 per cent.

TSTT is the country’s largest provider of communications solutions to the residential and commercial markets.

Couldn't the other company that TSTT is going to use for their Call Center services just hire the 200 employees who have went on the breadline?

But if they already have employees wouldn't that mean those existing employees will now have to be redirected towards working for TSTT call center and their pre-existing job would be vacant? Surely they wouldn't have already hired 200 new employees waiting to assign them to the TSTT call centres?

Was just wondering if it will be unrecoverable by then....you think it might take real years to get back to what it was after UNC get elected?

Has nothing to do with which party is in power. T&T has been in decline over the last decade and should stabilize by 2025 to a much lower quality of life than was experienced over the last decade. If you are 35 or younger consider migrating to Canada or Australia.

The UNC will have a different vision for Trinidad than the PNM.
PNM style is to tell businesses take what you get or close up and move out. UNC offers incentives and makes doing business lucrative. However in doing so sometimes they get themselves in trouble due to large deficit spending but everyone benefits when it is done. Everyone can participate in the economic success of Trinidad. Right now is only 1% established businesses surviving.
Personally I would like to see how a UNC government reacts to a situation like this.
Also everyone cant migrating to another country especially in COVID-19 times. It seems we are all trapped here for the long run.

Lol it have no UNC or PNM manifesto that could change T&T's inevitable outcome in the near future. Let's not derail this thread into politics or race.

Right now, when borders eventually reopens, plenty people gonna buss it to Canada and Australia!

Right now we are consolidating and keeping a leaner position in this country to mitigate our risk exposure. Starting by selling off 2 vehicles.

Alluh frighten? You better be, cause some people not talking! Remember every man for themself. Wise people are putting things in place and judging on how much connected in-the-know people this forum has, I'm sure it have members who not saying anything but putting things in place.

Now I'm not saying Canada or Australia and the likes are exempt from challenges of their own, think about it in an angle that says, once lined up properly, you can sustain a better quality life for a longer period of time until their sheit eventually hits the fan.

Some people are of the view, just stay in T&T and we go rally this one out. Sure you can, but this is a deep narco state with corruption and elitism rampant here, so only the haves will make it here.

My advice to the recently VSEP'ed people: Take your money and buy a land. Plant food on it. Make sure you and your family have something to eat. Now is not time to buy million dollar Prado, eating out at restaurants, and going cinema etc. Watch alluh pockets carefully.

Digicel Group has confirmed that the company has reduced staff as a result of digital transformation.

The Express understands that 60 workers were affected by this move, but Digicel head of Group Communications Antonia Graham did not confirm the exact headcount.

First TSTT now Digicel. like all companies care about is MC $$$$. you send home 60 persons and now 60 persons will from digicel plus whoever else they can convince to drop digicel also. Just like on FB A holes swear by blueband margarine and up to now they buying 4/5 for $20 like some kants. i drop that brand and all unilever products since they fire all locals and take the plant in some spanish country. langston roach products i buy now made right in saddle road. roberts margarine instead of blueband made right in barbados. them big companies only screwing us so is time we stop buying their products, they CANT TREAT WE SO.

Scotiabank

PETER CHRISTOPHER peter.christopher@guardian.co.tt

Almost 150 employees of Scotiabank are set to be out of a job by the end of May.

According to a letter sent to members of staff, the company announced its plans to close its collections department which would result in the retrenchment of all front line members of staff and support including managers.

Those departments, according to the communication, would now be rerouted through Scotiabank’s offices in the Dominican Republic from May 31.
