A POLICE inspector who often speaks on behalf of the police service and considers himself a law-enforcing tough-guy, is to be served with a summons to appear in court on a criminal assault charge. A seconf polcie officer is also to be served a summons on similar charges.

The charges were laid after a report was made to the Police Complaints Authority (PCA) which assigned an investigator, an acting Superintendent. The officer completed his investigation and submitted his file to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Roger Gaspard who instructed that the charges be laid.

The charges are that the senior police officer, who is considered a minor celebrity by some, and his colleague assaulted a contractor in Santa Cruz on July 12, 2016. The Inspector was charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and the constable was charged with the offences of common assault and assault by beating.

The matter is listed for hearing in the Port of Spain Magistrates' Court for February 23 when it is expected the two police officers will appear in court to answer the charges.

Arrangements are being made by the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service to provide an alternative host for Caribbean Communications Network (CCN) TV6’s Beyond the Tape programme to ensure that it continues.

“There’s no plan for the show to come off the air,” CCN CEO Shida Bolai said yesterday in response to queries after news broke that the programme’s current host, Insp Roger Alexander, had been charged with assault occasioning bodily harm.

Alexander and his colleague, PC Sheldon Mieres, were charged by summons on Thursday afternoon by acting Supt Alexander of the Anti-Corruption Investigative Bureau.

Both officers were charged with common assault and assault for allegedly beating Laventille resident Christopher Charles on July 12, 2016.
They are to appear before a Port of Spain magistrate on February 23.
