Apple may buy supercar manufacturer McLaren for US$1.9B

Postby Duane 3NE 2NR » September 23rd, 2016, 12:05 am

Rumoured takeover of F1 team owner would be Apple’s biggest deal since it bought Beats headphones in 2014

Apple has been linked with a shock US$1.9bn deal to buy McLaren Technology Group, the Formula One team owner and supercar maker.

A deal between Apple and the British company would dramatically shake up the technology and automotive industries. The California-based company’s interest in McLaren Technology Group highlights its ambition to develop technology that could be used in an electric and driverless car.

Apple has approached McLaren about a takeover but could also make a strategic investment in the company, the Financial Times reported.

IT would be rather interesting if apple has any design input into the engines
may be they will design something like this:

Technically you're paying for the brand.

People use the beats as a fashion accessory, so if they want to spend the money let them...

Beats also puts useless metal in the headphones just for weight so that it feels like premium headphones.

Yep, they were designed to be more of a fashion statement. It's absolutely brilliant, and A+ marketing. Give celebrities to wear them, be diverse in your marketing and create an elite culture surrounding the headphones. Aka You're not buying the headphones
You're buying a membership into a VIP club, before it gets saturated at least. It's the same strategy used by many entrepreneurs, from the creators of facebook to Instagram :)

From a sound quality standpoint you're better off buying other headphones..lol

Also didn't know Mclaren was muh more than motors and racing

Toothpaste and terminals

When we look at the potential of Apple buying or investing heavily in McLaren, most are unanimous in thinking Apple is unlikely to get into the business of making or even caring about supercars, and we're not going to see an Apple F1 team. But there's far more to McLaren than that. For instance, did you know that when you come into land at Heathrow, the gate you find yourself is determined by McLaren's technology? It analyses which planes are landing and when, and optimises gate selection to get people out of the airport more quickly.

In recent years, the company has directed its knowledge of extreme efficiency into other industries through McLaren Applied Technologies, a division that brings racing innovations to more mundane scenarios. In one quirky example, MAT was brought in to add some pit-lane insight into GlaxoSmithKline's toothpaste production line. GSK wanted to shorten the amount of time it took to switch which specific type of toothpaste was being put into the tubes - a process which took 39 minutes. With McLaren's help, they got that down to 15 minutes. It meant an extra six million tubes could be made each year. That and additional manufacturing cost savings meant GSK earned an extra £100m.

I've been using Audio-Technica ATH-M50x headphones for a while now and I'm pleased with them. Using them with a DAC is even better.

Honestly I'm not qualified to break down the finer points between headphones. I can only gauge which is better based on overall music quality.

TBH the bass on the Beats I tried was more pronounced than the ATX-M50 , but that does not necessarily mean it's a good thing. With the Audio Techina I was hearing notes I never heard before on the same track.
