Wrong oil in Diesel engine.

Postby ganeshlalchan » August 17th, 2016, 11:54 pm

Fellas, what would you do?

I went south from chaguanas to check a vehicle to buy.
While there and the seller and myself was test driving the vehicle I asked him if we could just get some oil for my vehicle as I believed it needed topping up before I headed back central.

We got the oil and when we got back to his home, before I left I just went and topped up. About a quart or little more.

I left south and when I reached Endeavour flyover, I started hearing a loud clanking and the vehicle started to rock side to side (the engine actually) real smoke. I had to get a wrecker to get home.

The thing is, I asked the parts shop for 15/40 Diesel engine oil. Schaefer to be exact. I told him it was for a Nissan caravan/panel van.

He gave me the oil and I said I'm accustomed to seeing a red gallon, he said they always changing the bottle, I looked at the bottle and it said 15/40 and on the top the parts shop put a sticker saying the price, 15/40 and diesel.

I didn't bother to check the oil, I just top up and wanted to get out from south.

Now I don't know if I should have them fix or replace the engine or accept its my fault.

But they selling motor oil for Diesel engines. A wrong tag or something. Not the Schaefer company doing, the parts shop put the diesel tag on the gasoline oil bottle.

Ah done know how some of you guys are and going to laugh and some gonna say I should have checked etc but in all seriousness it was just a top up and not an oil change so I didn't bother reading the contents....... what would you do?

Lol
Your engine was already fcuked to begin with. Topping up a quart of whatever oil wouldn't cause any immediate damage like that.

Its likely there is something else going on. Lots of people use diesel oil in petrol engines and vice versa with no ill effects. Did you check the oil level when you stopped? If there is damage due to lack of lubrication id say it was only a matter of time, with the constant oil levels dropping. To be honest there are many variables at play here. Have the engine checked out first to see what went wrong then you could look at finding the cause. A buddy had a similar problem with those symptoms turned out to be the balance shaft. So get it checked.

Check your engine... as gasoline engine oil in most instances meets diesel specifications and vice versa. Most SM/SN rated gasoline engine oil is also rated CF for diesel. I have used total quartz 9000 and Shell helix ultra 5w40 in my diesel van... Both of which are marketed as gasoline engine oils with no problems.

But seriously Check your engine. The gas engine oil would be lower down the list of things I would blame for the problem.

If however they sold you gear oil to put in your crankcase, that is a different story.

Most likely get an oil change done to see if that solves your problem.

Throw some pitch oil in the engine to clean it out after you changed the oil

When I had my EG8 I used to go to the gas station here next door has a engine wash place they change oil, I would generally ask for used oil and put it in my Civic. I collected used oil when they changed it from other people vehicle and put it in my car every week

I did this because the car had a oil leak and it was simply way too expensive to fix it. I did this for many years, taking free used oil that would last me 4 months before the engine started overheating due to the oil going very bad.

I saved over $6000 in oil over those years and I sold the car with the Engine still working fine. So I am pretty sure aswell his Engine was fcked before he put that Oil.

Ad 30 turbo, oil restriction ... Not changing your oil on time or sump pan beat upwards thus blocking oil suction.

Sorry buddy...that engine would of died even if you did put the correct oil...Wrong oil will only cause wear and tear increase on a long term basis.

I believe schaeffers only has one 15w40 oil which has the ratings for both gas and diesel so they don't have one specific for gas and one specific for diesel. So in other words is not that you bought the wrong oil, something may have been wrong with the engine and coincidentally happened after the oil top up.
