CAC to get the axe
Cabinet has moved to discontinue the Continuous Assessment Component of the primary school curriculum which forms part of the mark for the Secondary Entrance Assessment (SEA)
Education minister Anthony Garcia announced that the decision taken by Cabinet on Thursday, and was guided by feedback from the public during the ministry’s public consultations in February.
Garcia described the CAC element as an unnecessary burden on pupils and teachers. He said this year’s SEA pupils will be the last of the lot to write the examination with the CAC element in place.
He said the component was poorly thought out and had to go.
The structured assessment component will be removed, but assessment remains inherent in the system by other means such as course exams, said Garcia.
He said that children who were saddled with the CAC were placed at a disadvantage.
The CAC was implemented in 2012 under the former minister Dr Tim Gopeesingh.
Garcia made the announcement at a press conference on Friday at the ministry’s St Clair office, in the presence of representatives of TTUTA, the National Parent Teachers Association and the Teaching Service Commission.
