WTK: Changing the body/shell on a vehicle

Postby 9YDMS » March 19th, 2016, 11:06 pm

Can anyone tell me what are the rules/laws with regards to changing the body on a full chassis vehicle? (eg Crown/Jimny/pickup etc)

Can a newer/older body be used ?
Does one need to notify L/O of the change?

Much Thanks!

considering i see a ford bronco left hand drive with the whole body make over with wrought iron on the highway...u could probably rebuild a vehicle with all fibreglass and noone would care. man stitch iron slabs together and chrome paint it and thas all/ if us ee the eyesore and dangerous driving cu he dont have to care if he get bonks just put a replacement sheet and put u through his insurance to short change u on the repairs

Some people get permission legally, some don't , they Discriminate in that LO office.

As long as the original chassis is reused; the bodyshell can be replaced by another of the same model...
cf. the Commissioner personally (& request confirmation "in writing" for proof) before doing swap.

Thanks for the info...but how come so many trucks/cars running older plates with newer bodies?

The kind of things people get away with because nobody notices or they notice and refuse to do anything about it. Like another thing I observe on the road everyday, there are many people that either mix up their MGW and TARE weights on purpose so they can drive class 4 vehicles with a class 3 license eg if the MGW of a vehicle is 3350kgs (class 4) and the TARE weight of the same vehicle is 2500kgs they switch it around so they can drive it with a class3. The MGW of a goods vehicle is always more than the TARE weight

Got to apply to transport commissioner for permission to change body off a vehicle with a chassis,as for trucks you could change the cabin, some folks just swap out the plates, when LO catch them then is worries.

Ask all those Austin Minis that on the road, almost 60% of them have changed out the shell and reused the original chassis, but it's supposed illegal yet there are so many of those Minis roaming , some belonging to LO as well as popo
