This is shaping up to be a busy trial year.

Judge sets tentative trial date for Trump documents case

The date of Aug. 14, 2023, is almost certain to be pushed back to give both sides more time to prepare for the historic case.

U.S. District Court Judge Aileen Cannon bookmarked the last two weeks in August for the historic trial, part of an omnibus order setting some early ground rules and deadlines for the case. That would represent a startlingly rapid pace for a case that is expected to be complicated and require lengthy pretrial wrangling over extraordinarily sensitive classified secrets.

But a review of Cannon’s criminal cases since she took the bench in late 2020 suggests this is standard practice for the Florida-based judge. She typically sets trial dates six to eight weeks from the start of a case, only to allow weeks- or months-long delays as issues arise and the parties demand more time to prepare. While her order on Tuesday starts the clock on a slew of important pretrial matters in the Trump case, it’s not likely to resemble anything close to the timeframe that will ultimately govern the case.

Cannon’s order comes after a weekend in which Trump continued to raise eyebrows — and certainly catch the ear of his prosecutors — with a Fox News interview in which he acknowledged intentionally withholding documents from the federal government, claiming he wanted to sift through them for personal items. It was the latest twist in a shifting and meandering narrative Trump continues to tell about his handling of the files, which will surely become part of the pattern prosecutors intend to highlight at trial.

Trump is also under indictment in Manhattan for allegedly falsifying business records in connection with a hush money payment to a porn star. The trial in that case is scheduled for March 25, 2024.

But his entire defense was that he declassified it just by thinking about it and that he had the right as President to have the documents.

So he is aware of what he was doing. It was all deliberate and malicious really.

Exclusive: Donald Trump admits on tape he didn’t declassify ‘secret information’

Former President Donald Trump acknowledged on tape in a 2021 meeting that he had retained “secret” military information that he had not declassified, according to a transcript of the audio recording obtained by CNN.

“As president, I could have declassified, but now I can’t,” Trump says, according to the transcript.

CNN obtained the transcript of a portion of the meeting where Trump is discussing a classified Pentagon document about attacking Iran. In the audio recording, which CNN previously reported was obtained by prosecutors, Trump says that he did not declassify the document he’s referencing, according to the transcript.

Yes he should’ve..

America should also look back at their idol JFK and notice he wasn’t so different from trump.

Him and trump are the only 2 that actually had out of pocket wealth and funded their own wins and he was taken care of swiftly…who knows if that’s the plan for trump…

Neither fully funded their campaigns.

Trump contributed $66 million to his $1 billion campaign.
Kennedy donated the use of an airplane to his $10 million campaign.

Kennedy had been a congressman and was a sitting senator at the time of his presidential election with an existing, well-funded campaign.

The only modern, noteworthy candidate to spend heavily on his own campaign was Ross Perot. Perot's inflation-adjusted campaign spending was more than half-again beyond what Trump would spend.

Iowa fires starting gun in race to stop Trump

Iowa's first-in-the-nation GOP caucus date has officially been set for Jan. 15, kicking off a frantic countdown to what many Republicans see as their best chance to stop former President Trump from romping to re-nomination.

Why it matters: A Trump loss or close result in Iowa would scramble expectations and upend the entire primary. A landslide victory could clear the way for a 2020 rematch with President Biden, tying the fate of every Republican on the ballot to the twice-indicted former president.

Driving the news: Every GOP presidential candidate, with the exception of former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, is expected to travel to Iowa at some point in the next three weeks, according to the Des Moines Register.

On July 14, former Fox News host Tucker Carlson will host onstage interviews with six candidates at the Family Leadership Summit, organized by evangelical leader Bob Vander Plaats.

On July 28, Trump and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis are both expected to attend the Iowa GOP’s Lincoln Dinner — likely putting the two Republican front-runners in the same room for the first time in this campaign.

State of play: A lack of quality Iowa polling has allowed rival candidates to declare the race wide open, even as Trump extends his dominant lead in national surveys.

Between the lines: No Iowa politician is more influential at the moment than Gov. Kim Reynolds, who won 95 of the state's 99 counties last year and has a near-90% approval rating among Republicans.

Reynolds has declined to formally endorse a candidate, but her repeated appearances with DeSantis over the last several months have caught the attention — and anger — of the Trump campaign, the New York Times reports.

Trump lashed out at Reynolds on Truth Social today, claiming credit for her 2018 election — a comment that irked Reynolds when he made it at an Iowa rally last month — and attacking her for remaining "neutral."

In your defense, only four US Presidents have lost the popular vote but then won the office. Donald Trump is one of the four.

It's also interesting that ten US Presidents lost their home state during their successful election. A total of ten US Presidents have lost their reelection bids.

Donald Trump is the only US President to have lost all three.

In the last 6 months Trump has bashed Reynolds, Kemp, De Santis, Ducey, Yougkin, Sununu and De Wine. All GOP Governors who with the exception of Kemp and Youngkin won their states by handy margins and by much bigger margins than Trump got votes in those States. He also definitely needs to win those States with maybe the exception of New Hampshire (Sununu) to become President.

Iowa should be a testing ground for his salted earth policy towards Governors he doesn't like.

Trump's third criminal indictment seems to be coming up. This time, it's January 6th.

Former President Donald Trump said Tuesday that he has been notified that he is the target of an investigation by a Washington-based grand jury examining the Jan. 6 riot and efforts to overturn the 2020 election.

First fake electors indictments.

Michigan attorney general charges fake Trump electors over alleged 2020 election crimes

Michigan’s attorney general on Tuesday criminally charged 16 so-called “fake electors” for former President Donald Trump, accusing them of a fraudulent effort to reverse President Joe Biden’s victory in the state’s 2020 election.

The 16 people each face eight charges, including conspiracy, election law forgery, and uttering and publishing, state Attorney General Dana Nessel said in a video announcement.

Nessel called the alleged plan a “desperate effort” to “undermine democracy.” Several of the accused are active in Republican politics.

Nessel has not ruled out potential criminal charges against additional defendants, her office said.

The case is the first time that any members of fake Electoral College slates for Trump have been criminally charged.

Nessel’s announcement also came hours after Trump said that Department of Justice special counsel Jack Smith has designated him a target in a federal criminal probe of attempts to undo the ex-president’s loss in 2020.

Smith’s investigation is focused on, among other things, the attempted use of fake Electoral College slates to thwart Biden’s victory.

Ginni Thomas Under Scrutiny Following Arrest of Michigan Fake Electors

There are calls for Virginia "Ginni" Thomas, the wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, to face investigation for allegedly trying to overturn the 2020 election results after 16 Republicans were charged in Michigan over a "false elector" plot.

Ginni Thomas has long come under scrutiny over her actions in the wake of the last election, including sending text messages to Donald Trump's former chief of staff Mark Meadows urging him to help overturn the results of the election, while describing Joe Biden's fair victory as the "greatest heist of our history."

Ginni Thomas is also alleged to have sent emails to dozens of Arizona election officials and lawmakers claiming it was their "constitutional duty" to install a "clean slate of electors" who would be willing to declare Trump the winner in the Grand Canyon State in 2020. Thomas is said to have told the lawmakers to "stand strong in the face of political and media pressure" and falsely claimed the responsibility to choose electors was "yours and yours alone."

On 14 December, a group of 13 Republicans, including Arizona GOP chair Kelli Ward, met to sign a document falsely declaring themselves the "duly elected and qualified electors" for the state and that they had the power to award Arizona's 11 electoral votes for Trump, instead of the state's true winner of Biden.

Biden more than likely as the mainstream especially the media would be fully behind him.

Only way Trump can win is if the economy is screwed under Biden. Issues about abortion, immigration, black, putin, lgbtq, guns, etc would take back seat because nobody likes their money interfered with.

Fourth Trump criminal indictments expected.

Fulton county prosecutors prepare racketeering charges in Trump inquiry

Exclusive: racketeering charges based on influencing witnesses and computer trespass, sources say

The Fulton county district attorney investigating Donald Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election results in the state of Georgia has developed evidence to charge a sprawling racketeering indictment next month, according to two people briefed on the matter.

The racketeering statute in Georgia requires prosecutors to show the existence of an “enterprise” – and a pattern of racketeering activity that is predicated on at least two “qualifying” crimes.

In the Trump investigation, the Fulton county district attorney, Fani Willis, has evidence to pursue a racketeering indictment predicated on statutes related to influencing witnesses and computer trespass, the people said.

Willis had previously said she was weighing racketeering charges in her criminal investigation, but the new details about the direction and scope of the case come as prosecutors are expected to seek indictments starting in the first two weeks of August.

Trump news: Former president outstrips nearest Republican rival DeSantis by 30 points in latest poll

Donald Trump remains under the scrutiny of prosecutors across the country over a wide range of issues, and at the same time appears to be solidifying his dominance over the 2024 Republican primary field.

The former president led in two polls of crucial early primary-season states commissioned and released by Fox News on Sunday. Mr Trump has an impressive 30-point gap separating him from his nearest competitor, Florida Gov Ron DeSantis, who himself has been making an aggressive play for the state and seeking to align himself politically with Kim Reynolds, the state’s Republican governor.
