Ian to pay $630,000 in defamation lawsuit

TELEVISION talk-show host Ian Alleyne was yesterday ordered to pay the sum of $630,000 to Shaun Sammy, the son of local contractor Junior Sammy after he failed to enter a defence in a defamation lawsuit brought against him by the businessman.

After the assessment of damages was made by Master Marissa Robertson at the Hall of Justice in Port of Spain, Sammy told reporters he intended to give the money to charity.

He filed the lawsuit in October of last year after Alleyne, who was not present in court yesterday, made certain statements during his Crime Watch programme on the cable network CNC3. The statements were in relation to Sammy being arrested and charged for driving while under the influence of alcohol. The businessman had also managed to secure an injunction from a High Court judge preventing Alleyne from speaking, publishing or broadcasting on his programme or otherwise anything in relation to Sammy.

Sammy eventually pleaded guilty to the drunk driving charge before Magistrate Marissa Gomez at the Port of Spain Magistrates’ Court earlier this year and was placed on a bond to keep the peace for three years. In addition to the $630,000 Alleyne will also have to pay Sammy’s legal cost which is yet to be assessed.

Sammy was represented by attorneys Ramesh Lawrence Maharaj, Om Lalla and Dereck Balliram.

Attempts to contact Alleyne for comment on the order were unsuccessful as calls to his cellular phone went unanswered.

I agree it does not sound logical that Ian could get sued for reporting the facts. But knowing Ian he probably say all kinda shite about Sammy, in addition to the drunk driving. That's probably why he got sued.

Saying that Ian Alleyene got sued for reporting facts is nonsense.When the incident happened,he run with the story in a daily,that the file was missing and he was accusing Shaun of paying the police to move the file and that he was going to see that it wasn't going to be swept under the carpet, because he investigating and doh care how much money they have he will expose them. Let him talk now.
He was also advising a man whose old van crash into a median in caroni not to take it so (although the man crash his own vehicle and JS offered to fix it out of goodwill,and later recanted because of miss Alleynes ridiculous behavior),made a lot of accusations there too.
