Taxi fares rise by $2
By SEAN DOUGLAS Wednesday, November 18 2015

COMMUTERS from North Trinidad to South and Central Trinidad can expect to pay an extra $2 per trip on their taxifare, according to a news conference held at the Central/ South Taxi stand at Curepe Junction yesterday by a local taxi association. The increases take place from November 30, and by Newsday’s calculation will cost a Monday-to-Friday commuter an extra $100 per month.

The taxi fare from Curepe to San Fernando will go from $13 to $15. The fare from Port-of- Spain to San Fernando moves from $15 to $17, while the fare from Chaguanas to San Fernando increases from $10 to $12.

Reports are that the fare from Curepe to Chaguanas has already been raised by $1, from $7 to $8, with increases also done for other routes such as Curepe to Kelly Village.

One Curepe to Kelly Village driver empathised with the Monday, November 30, price hikes, saying that running a taxi is not cheap, and that his route colleagues have already raised their fare. Commuters expressed to Newsday a variety of reactions to the pending increases, when approached at the Curepe to San Fernando taxistand.

Adrian Acosta, president of the Chaguanas to San Fernando Taxi Association, explained the hikes. “Due to all the things that are affecting us — like traffic- jams, higher maintenance costs, car-parts going up, and the gas-price that just raised — we can’t afford to sustain this burden any more,” he told Newsday. “We decided to keep a meeting with our membership and it was highly supported that we increase fares by two dollars across the board.” He said 65 persons attended the meeting last Friday at Guaracara Park, Pointe-a-Pierre. Asked if his association needed to first get permission from any State body (such as the Ministry of Transport) before raising their fares, Acosta replied, “No. There is nobody that regulates us. We are in charge of our fare increase. So we sit down as individuals and discuss where we should go, and where we should not go.” Newsday asked if a lack of checks and balances allows the association a free hand, say for a $2 raise after just a 15 percent fuel-hike? Acosta replied, “If there were checks and balances, the fare would be higher than that. We try to keep it as low as we could.

It is eight years now that we have been working for the fare we are working at.

“In 2008 was the last fare increase.

So we have taken that burden for a long time. We cannot afford to take it any more, so we have to pass on some of that to the travelling public”.

Acosta’s views were seconded by Dane St John, president of theCurepe to San Fernando stand at Curepe Junction. “The public travels with us, but does not know the expenses we have, monthly and weekly

This is a call to all taxi drivers within the san juan / Barataria /Aranguez / Don Miguel an environs. Raise the taxi fare more for all those streets that they are putting speed humps. The speed humps will make you burn more gas with the stop and go, mashup shock mounts, i sure mash up other suspension parts, make your work longer as you have to navigate the speed humps slowly so you pick up less passengers and earn less money, so raise the fares more to compensate.

Lol by all means you can eagerly await the 10-15 years, meanwhile the economy crumbles around us while we're stuck in traffic. Rapid rail fever (and cost) will inevitably lead to skipping over many innovative traffic solutions as we put all our hopes and dreams into a train that most of us (I.e. Those with cars) will rarely use, other than for novelty.

Wait till next budget for an increase in gas prices.
There will be a total removal on all gas benefits to prop up and pay for Racket Rail.
Just join the dots

If you take it off and on now you think 100 buses will make you dependant on it?

A person's quality of life isn't negatively affected by a sudden lack of doubles
Could you honestly state your quality of life would not be negatively affected when you have to walk/wait for a bus/beg for a ride to go any & every where you want to go?

Well. If u hav to walk u will become healthier also if u have to beg u will become humble. :geek:
The question was really geared to highlight the nationwide beat up" of increase in doubles prices (which last increase was abt 10yrs ago similarly) vs a similar increase in taxi fares but little or no beat up.
Btw is this thread 2 pages yet?

It is about time they raised the price. Cost of living affects everyone and everybody wants a lil something for their family to be comfortable. Have to stay ahead of inflation.

Exactly, but the mindless sheep here use their dubious calculations to say "look they cost ah gas only gone by 15% but them increase it by 30%)"..........completely ignorant to the fact that it is the inflation rate that sets and affects their price. The gas price increase was just the catalyst to push them into enacting the increase. It would have happened eventually and maybe to a lesser degree in the near future.

yes

But buses are late not because of lack of availability, it is because of traffic. 100 more buses means more traffic.

common sense tells that more people taking the bus will result in less people using private cars

if not then whats the purpose of the rail?
