Paving a car park with asphalt

Postby RBphoto » August 12th, 2015, 1:41 pm

Hi guys,
asking for a friend. Person wants half a lot of land paved with asphalt to accommodate parking of 3 ton trucks and the odd container. Having seen many containers topple and have the supporting legs sink right through the ground at their other sites, they are looking for a reputable contractor to do work on bare soil at their site to make it sturdy enough for this purpose. Any suggestions guys? Small contractor can handle that or JS/ Moonans/ Allescon for it?

why paved thou...??
you can also pour concrete and use that... whatever method u choose just be sure you have a good foundation..as if you dont..no matter the top finish, asphalt or concrete, the supporting legs will go straight through... :!:

They figure compacting, and paving properly could be cheaper than a half a lot concrete plinth. Willing to be corrected tho.

The pavement structure (capping layer (optional), aggregate sub-base (optional), aggregate base and asphalt wearing course) has to be designed to not only support the wheel loads from the vehicles, but the concentrated loads from the support legs of the container trailers. It is not just a simple matter of installing asphalt over a gravel surface.

Call Rodney at 481-3147 and tell him what exactly you need. He does this type of construction work.

there are civil engineering consultants who would charge a tiny sum to give the design.

I'm not an engineer or anything but parking 3 ton trucks on asphalt will surely result in some sinkage over time.

you need large boulders on the bottom with graded sizes, coming up to blue metal and then paving on top

Slag from Mittal is not so cheap anymore. Furthermore, you can't put down the slag and then immediately pave over it.

The slag produced by Mittal/Ispat/ISCOTT is hygroscopic. It absorbs moisture and the moisture reacts with residual chemicals in the slag and expands. This causes "flowering" of the asphalt, like what happened to the asphalt at the car parks at Pizza Hut in Gulf View, PriceSmart in Chaguanas and FMCL in Point Lisas.

If you intend to use slag, it has to be left to weather for at least six months. You have to churn up the stockpile regularly during this period so that all the slag is exposed to the weather and all chemical reactions occur.

But the slag hardly has any fine material to help lock the particles together to form a tightly knitted layer. So it is best to mix in some red sand to help fill in the voids. Gradation analyses on the slag and red sand can determine the best mixing proportions.

yeah, not easy to pave over we used it over a dirt road and it stuck down good into the dirt
and working ok without any paving
the size is a problem, some load were big pieces and some smaller

I think that was the problem the Spanish contractor on the south highway had in the 90's

For a car park , we used slag left it open to weather for about a year and half , while in use . Paved and its quite durable .

Only 6"? By mat you mean 6" square BRC?

:| You do know that the yield strength of the ribbed rods (high tensile steel) is almost twice as much as the smooth rods (mild steel)?

The critical load in your car park pavement structure design will be the load being transmitted from the loaded semi-trailer support legs to the ground. The pavement structure will have to resist the punching shear force through it.

My waste of time UTT technician advice, go hire a civil engineer to design a proper pavement structure for your car park. You will need to provide him/her with the following information:

1) The location of the car park (so the person can determine the native soil type and engineering properties)
2) The estimated number of each type of vehicle that will utilise the car park on a daily basis
3) The design life for your car park (it does not make sense designing a pavement structure for 20 years if you only intend on using the land as a car park for, say, 10 years).

Not engineering advice, but I would demarcate an area for container parking. Reinforce that area with proper foundation. The rest of the area can then be done in a less stringent manner.

it is a common sold item there so just call and ask
you have to supply your own transport
