‘Good can come from Morvant/Laventille’

Published on Jul 1, 2015, 9:31 pm AST
By Michelle Loubon

Jubilation reigned at Morvant Epiphany Anglican School camp when the Standard Five class was presented with its Secondary Entrance Assessment (SEA) results yesterday.

It was an even more special moment for the two pupils who top scored—Kiwani Francis, 12, and Jada Joseph, 12.

When the September 2015 school term starts, outstanding pupil Kiwani will be heading to Queen’s Royal College while his schoolmate Jada will be attending St Joseph’s Convent, Port of Spain.

Interviewed yesterday, principal Joan Augustus-Morson said: “Good can come out of Morvant/Laventille. We sent up 93 children. All of them got places. We had good results. About 36 children got seven- year schools. Some are going to St George’s College, Barataria. Some are going to Bishop’s East.

“We are very proud of the students. Another boy, Thierry Carlow, will be heading to Queen’s Royal College. I want to compliment Kiwani and Jada. It goes to show good can come out of Laventille. I wish all my children the best of luck in the future.”

At times, the Morvant/ Laventille community has had to deal with the stigma and discrimination attached to the community because of drugs, gang warfare and violence.

Augustus-Morson also paid kudos to the complement of teachers, especially Standard Five teachers Earlene Robinson, Lisa Rodney-Driggs and Debbie McEwan-John.

She added: “We are proud of the teachers. We continue to excel because of the dedication and commitment of the teachers.

It was a lot of hard work. I want to thank God. We are a praying school. We prayed for our children. “

Wiping away the tears, Jada, who lives in Morvant Extension, said: “I feel good. I feel great. It was my first choice. I like mathematics.”

Asked about her career plans, she said: “I want to be veterinarian. I want to take care of animals.”

Kiwani, a resident of Romain Lands, Morvant, said: “I feel great. I worked hard. I really studied hard.”

Asked about his future, he said: “I want to be a police officer. I enjoy helping people.”

Asked what advice he would give to the incoming Standard Five pupils, he said: “Study hard and you will achieve success.”

Jada’s father, Raphael Joseph, a prisons officer, commended his wife, Lesia George, for the tre- mendous work she did with Jada in preparing her for the SEA.

The Prime minister, minister of education or even a rep of them should have been there in that depressed community to show a sort of acknowledging and encouragement to these students.

One of my good friends and lab partner from Maloney graduated with better grades than me from Elec. Eng.. She is did her masters as well. Really Dark beauty. Changed my perspective on race relations when people see me (tall fair mixed indo) walking with her in Curepe to get taxi after class, People stopping their car to comment on our "Relationship", most negro saying she get a man to take care of her, some saying that she will leave me for a black man no matter what I have to offer. Indians usually started with a cuss before some silly racial argument. Whereupon (either situation) she would say in the sweetest voice while holding eye contact that they ought to be getting along now, at which point they mash gas and get d fack out of there. She told me to never to be afraid while she was around, she would always protect me

If this keeps up people will start getting extra credits & better jobs just for being from Laventille.
Somehow people are correlating non violent & aggressive behavior to academic prowess.
I was a Prison Officer for 7 years. I can assure you their are a lot of extremely intelligent inmates making jail for violence.
Rage clouds the minds of even the most intellectual of persons.

As a contractor I built houses in Laventille. The kids there are no different than anywhere in this country.
They seek happiness given the opportunities they are provided.
They also seek to be treated equally & with the respect they have earned.

Why should the area we come from justify acknowledgement when we accomplish great things?
This is a false sense of pride.
In some cases it leads to premature peaking, whereby the individual believes they have already achieved success in life and need not strive to accomplish greater things.

Some may say:
The only good that can come of this hype is that others may be inspired to push themselves in spite of their present living conditions.
But it acts as a double edged sword:
By that logic others may lose hope that they will ever amount to anything more after they fail an exam, because they see that even with the best environment they cannot succeed.

Environmental circumstances should not be glorified to prove that you are somehow better than someone else.
In fact being better than someone else is just an illusion. What we really mean to say is that person's worth is more than someone else's.
Worth is a matter of perspective. If my daughter is worth more to me than my Neighbour then my daughter will be given preference over my neighbour.

If a Laventille degree is worth more than a Penal degree to someone (or vice verse) then they really have a messed up sense of value.

This....
Articles like this do more harm dan good.
Also why should d PM go there to congratulate them? Depressed persons go to Rosary and pass for QRC aswell but u dont see her there. Dat would make it seem like comin from Lavantille and passing for QRC is a monumentous event in those areas. As said before docs came out from there.
Congrats btw.

Eeeet phat?

Most likely.

She married her lifelong boyfriend from the area, a barber. I met him a few times. About 6'5", always with scissors in his back pocket... One blade sharpened on both sides. Told me he could mark with that outside edge.
