What would you like to see done in the next government term?

Postby janfar » June 26th, 2015, 6:36 am

Right... This is not a thread about who will win and who did what to who. Not about who smoke what, who rape who, who bull what.

Very simple, what would like to see started or completed by the next elected government?

Here are a few things that I would like:

1. Diversification of the economy with more emphasis on tourism.

2. Decriminalization of marijuana.

3. Setup of a compeyency management program for government workers.

4. Highway from Anywhere to Mayaro.

5. Improving the robustness of the public transport system.

6. Removal of the fuel subsidy.

7. A complete separation from church and state (find your own funding for anything that doesn't promote national culture)

8. Marriage equality.

I have a lot more but these are just a few that I can think of right now.

The subsidy is a burden on the economy. The money can used to improve the public transport system and to introduce cleaner burning fuels like CNG or Ethanol. Improving the PTSC will nullify the ripple effect of taxi's wanting to increase prices. Large companies can benefit from tax incentives which will prevent to price of food going up as a result of increased fuel prices.

Trinidad is probably one of the only countries in the world that does not feel the effect of fuel prices at the pump due to the global economy. This is not a good thing as it can cause an economy to collapse on false riches- case in point Greece.

1. Diversification of the economy with more emphasis on tourism and agriculture.

2. Significant improvements in the public health care system.

3. A proper and transparent national infrastructure management system.

4. Improving the robustness of the public transport system.

5. Removal of the fuel subsidy, and greater tax benefits for users of compressed natural gas vehicles.

6. Two year mandatory military service for young adults (18 - 20 years of age)

7. Greater emphasis on investigating and prosecuting "white collar" criminals.

8. Mandatory drug (cocaine, marijuana, amphetamines, phencyclidine) and alcohol testing of people in the public service, especially politicians.

9. Complete re-structuring of the police service to promote the good, remove the bad and remove bureaucracy.

10. A complete separation from church and State.

11. Greater animal protection laws.

12. Greater emphasis on and policing of environmental protection and management.

13. Greater emphasis on and policing of health and safety practices in workplaces, including government offices.

14. Greater emphasis on border patrols of coastal waters to prevent the influx of marijuana and other illegal drugs.

15. Complete ban on consumption of glass bottle beverages in public spaces.

16. Greater emphasis on supporting and rewarding individuals/organisations using alternative forms of energy (solar, wind, wave, etc.).

17. Greater transparency in the procurement of good and services (revert procurement of goods and services for the government to the Central Tenders Board and remove the corruption that currently occurs within State owned enterprises).

18. Remove social programmes that encourage people to be dependent on the State (food card, baby grant, etc.).

Social programs are also a burden on the economy.

I'd like to see better enforcement of money laundering laws si they actually catch people.

Also would like to see property prices drop to more attainable prices

all those in jail for murder should be executed to relief some strain in our overcrowded jails...

jailers should be self sufficient eg planting their own crops etc...then with the excess, it should be exported or sold locally to help finance those families who they affected....

stop the importation of foreign used 3rd class vehicles to alleviate traffic.

create man made reefs to encourage marine spawning and enforce maritime laws....

destroy beetham, lavantille etc....build good homes for those individuals so it wouldnt be an eyesore....and as a payback let them maintain their own infrastructure ( roads, building etc) so if they decide to mash it up then it would be no others fault beside theirs....

encourage agriculture so tdad could be self sustaining

give every citizen 500000 over 18, then stop ALL forms of grants etc...if they decide to squander it then let them eat dirt and sheit...no remorse..in addition to this...families with more children than they could afford to mind before the 500000 should have their tubes tied, vasectomy etc...so no make ah child for 500000 mentality

All government officials must have mandatory 24hr. recordings of their daily lives (bodycam/microphones) in order to prevent abuse of public office.

I think this is the only option for Trinidad..

Further to the above.
Get local production up.

Enhance the support for new producers..limit producers to one block or by a volume of production....spread the wealth, experience employment and knowledge base..Create a real BROAD industry...

We have an excellent opportunity to be a incubator for oilfield labor world wide.

The Ministry can easily bridge the gap to enable the local financing and ownership of production companys and assets.

COuple that with agriculture, and we could be self sustaining

Ministry of works must have proper road maintenance schedules, and proper fixing of potholes, manholes and any deformation in the road to ensure basic infrastructure is properly maintained.

Marijuana possession is a non-violent crime, that makes a person end up locked up with murderers, rapists and thieves.

It is also safer than peanuts, i.e., peanuts kill more people every year than marijuana.

Plenty:

- Enterprise zones in every borough, with emphasis on ICT, telecoms, and high-tech industries
- A proper macroeconomic plan, which by 2030 leads to a HDI rating of High
- The economy should only be 20% of GDP from energy..MAX, and 20% manufacturing
- Simplify the tax system. For individuals, only a housing tax based on house size for local government, an income tax and NIS. For businesses, corporate tax. SMEs don't have to pay this, under a certain revenue amount. High earners only pay 40% income tax, max.
- Privatise state bodies, on case by case basis

- Tram systems in Town, Arima to Grande and Arima to San Juan, Chaguanas to Couva, and Sando to Penal, Moruga and Pt. Fortin
- Tunnel to Chaguaramas and Maracas
- Highways fitted to global standards, with strong medians, even emergency telephones
- Minimise maxi-taxis, and allow more call a cab firms

- Either disband CARICOM, or make it a true free trade area. Establish a naval force with USN/Royal Navy assistance to stop drugs/human trafficking
- Sign free trade treaties wit the EU, NAFTA, China, India, Nigeria, South Africa, Brazil

- Legalise drugs
- Split the Min. of Nat Security into Interior and Defence Ministries
- Collate all culture ministries into one, inclusive of Sport
- Lower voting age to 16
- Offer devolution to Tobago, and to any Trinidad borough that wants it. This means being allowed to set laws, raise taxes, etc.
- Seek political union with all the other southern/Eastern Caribbean countries

- Abolish the Senate
- Have one Chamber, with 52 MPs
- Have a Bill of Rights, USA-esque
- Elect MPs with a mix of FPTP and a list. 38 constituencies with the rest list MPs. Every voter has a choice of a constituency vote and list vote.
- Abolish role of President, mix with PM, like how South Africa has
- Lessen amount of public holidays
- No PM term limits

- Build residences in city/town centres
- Urban regeneration, with new shops, businesses to encourage growth

- Itemise GATE to industries of national importance, including masters/doctorates
- Lessen OJT programme, for more placements in private sector
- Grants for people who have viable business ideas, and more grants with higher revenues
- Build a UTT campus of humanities in Grande, Princes Town, or other large town without a UTT campus currently
- Reverse laptops in schools programme

- Outlaw public urination with a fine of $20,000, unless for good reason (proven medical condition)
- Place homeless in dedicated shelters.
- Outlaw drinking alcohol in public with fine of $100,000
- Outlaw public littering, with fine of $2,000

Some really great ideas here, just proves that the wrong ppl running this country. All of them just want to get in office to thief as much as they could and rape the coffers for their own benefit.

I agree with diversification of the economy towards tourism and less dependance on oil and gas. Every town should have something of interest to make it a tourist destination. Also agree with more resources allocated towards agriculture. Also strict fines for cussing in public, that really pisses me off. What about recycling? So much could be done to improve our country but those in power do not seem to share the vision to help propel our country to first world status.
