HELP!!! Advice Needed on BOUNCED Check...

Postby OracleTnT » June 24th, 2015, 3:04 pm

So a stranger purchased some items from a relative and paid with a fraud Manager's Check (FCB).
The check was deposited in person's acct in RBC.
RBC just called and said that the check is not valid and was given a copy of the check by the Bank.
Any body knows the process in handling this situation.
Also which bank will have the original check?
Thanks.

Ok a similar situation happened to me recently. .. The bank (rbc) that accepted check should have it... In my case I made a police report and then I was advised to go fraud squad. ..

My situation was dissolved before I made it to fraud squad because the police visited the fraudster and he paid me off next day. .

Report to Police,/fraud squad

and prepare to lawyer up with the bank....if necessary

my thought is
A CERTIFIED CHECK is the banks risk-cuz....its certified...FCB should honor it

Fraud certified cheque would mean it's a fake certified cheque. Whoever accepted that cheque should have called the bank and have them verify if it's a legit cheque. How much did they lose?

Many places no longer accept them because of all the fraud. I think one or more of the banks do not verify via phone anymore....they say you have to deposit it. So best bet is cash or card...

Take all info go to police station report and then hit the fraud squad same time. Hopefully you have their ID & contact details. Lawyer can't help as the bank is not obligated to accept/honour a fraudulent managers cheque as they didn't issue it and all of em put out notices about how to spot a fake quite a while ago.

Well that's chit.

so certified cheqs no longer certified...and if I have to call for a cert chq I might as well call for a normal chq

It's the banks responsibility to prevent the fraud...just now we would have to call for 100 dollar bills.

op, you could go to your bank & retrieve the cheque, or they will mail it to you. then take it to fraud squad along with the list of items & serial numbers of what the person used it to purchase. It might take a while & you may not recover your losses, but justice will eventually be served.
A good practice is to call the bank to confirm the cheque, no bank will refuse to confirm a managers cheque. Just call the branch where it was issued & give them the cheque number & they will confirm it.
Another good thing is to take a copy of the persons ID when they want to pay with cheques, & write their name ID# & receipt# on it for ease of future reference

If someone is making a fake cheque, as in designing and printing a cheque home and submitting it to a business....how can it be the banks responsibility to prevent that? It's up to the business owner to call the bank and verify the cheque.

In the rare rare event I take a cheque,I photocopy or take a pic of drivers permit and write down vehicle number even after calling bank. Wayyy too much cheque fraud nowadays. People does vex when I tell them I don't accept personal or company cheques, I tell them better they vex than I vex.

Bank would say the check in question was either stolen or scanned and then forged, once a guy bought a van from my dad,guy had a certified check, when my sis called FCB branch where the check was made, they told her they can't disclose that info on the fone, she then asked the person how can she verify the check is real, person said bring it to the bank where it was made oui,now that was the branch where it was made EH.Fraud Squad opie.

Its the same responsibility of the CBTT to make it as tough as possible to counterfeit money.

Im not disputing what either of you are saying....

but If Im paying to have a chq certified
-the money is immediately taken from my account and the bank has use and benefit until the chq is presented..

then its supposed to be an instrument that is beyond question.

whats the point of CERTIFYING THE CHECK?

The intention of a certified check is insure the person have the money,a guarantee it will not bounce, only problem now we have people making their own home.

Errrr.....the fraud certified cheque does not come from the bank....its home made.....

Or made with stolen cetified cheque leafs

The only time the bank will become aware of its existence is when it's presented to them for payment

So there is no difference in me paying for a Cert Chq and writing a normal one..except the cost of getting the certification that means squat.

You not understanding that a fraudulent certified cheque has nothing to do with passing through the bank. Is like I make some kfc home and sell you it and tell you it's kfc. You gonna blame kfc for that?

I understand that clearly.

But ...As you said you dont trust the cert system enough so you need to authenticate it before you take receipt.
And you not stupid, uninformed or inexperienced...So I would think that many merchants feel the same way.

So then whats the point of me as a consumer making the effort to certify a chq if its gonna be treated the same way by most merchants?

Redman is correct. At a point there needs to be some sort of institutional foundation that fosters confidence. In this case the initial onus is on the commercial bank. Else why offer it at all.

The CB mitigates counterfeiting by making money harder to be counterfeited. People still do it but in most cases the CB is not responsible because they have done what is reasonable and possible to control for it. Arguably, the local banks have NOT met this requirement.

You've seen some of the Certified Cheques? I could probably make that on my home computer. When it occurs they instead distance themselves from the matter.

A 3rd world solution that is highly inefficient.

inefficient maybe but very effective. I wasn't kidding Why? you said it... We live in a third world country and all we can do, as backward as it sounds, is take preventative measures to ensure that we do not get ripped off.
