MEDIA RELEASE:
CARONI WATER TREATMENT PLANT STOPPED DUE TO OILY SUBSTANCE IN RIVER

At 7:15 p.m. on Tuesday 24th February 2015, operators at the Caroni Water Treatment Plant observed an oily substance in the river, which led to the immediate stoppage of operations at the plant.

The facility was restarted at approximately 12:45 a.m. this morning – Wednesday 25th February, 2015 after the river was cleared of the oily substance, as well as clean up and disinfection works on the plant.

The Authority assures customers that the supply from the Plant is safe and meets World Health Organisation standards, however, flushing exercises are currently being carried out, in order to eliminate any residue of the substance that may have entered the distribution system.

Customers served by the Caroni Plant, who may be experiencing a kerosene like smell in their supply are advised not to use, but allow the supply to run until it clears. Customers with stored supplies are further advised that they may need to empty and clean the walls of their tanks with household cleaning agents before refilling.

The Environmental Management Authority (EMA) has been contacted regarding the contaminant observed in the river and an investigation into its source will be conducted today – Wednesday 25th February.

The Authority apologises for the inconvenience and thanks customers for their patience and understanding

For further information please contact WASA’s Customer Call Centre toll free at 800 4420/26.

I think they exaggerated the term 'fire water' ....please let the owner of that tap know they may get an official state visit soon as some PM's may have interest

Maybe UML could post a couple of new pics or videos with people saying how much they love diesel water!

Your government working for you!

All the brand new pipe they put down and they still can't give the nation a potable supply of water...only good for giving contractors money

this feels like dejavu all over again... a la oil spills in south... but don't worry tuners with the EMA investigating we will surely find out who is responsible for this.. just like the oil spills.

With the low standard for chemical storage and use in Trinidad I'm sure our water supply is often contaminated with the pesticides and other hazards...if the water isn't smelling bad like in the case of the diesel we may never know.

Would you prefer drink the water then?

When the water comes in its like this to mix with the polymer and coagulant so the oil gets mixed up too:

There are skimmers in the system to remove whats floating on the surface:

It might float back up here but im not sure how that reads for the sand filters and wet well.
