Cost of tinting windows vs replacing them with UV cut panes

Postby TriniAutoMart » January 2nd, 2015, 10:56 am

Hey tuners need some advice.
Looking to get the windows in my house tinted. I was asking around and someone suggested that it would be cheaper to replace all the panes with pre-tinted glass.
Anyone here have experience with this and can give advice?
Thanks.

I doubt. replacing windowpanes requires that you dig out the old ones, put in new glass (which costs), re-putty them, paint the putty and any damage to the frames... so, not sure where that advice comes from frankly, that's my two cents.

I had a feeling that replacing the glass would be a lot more costly.

^^ I agree with that...even though a good quality film may not be cheap, I cant imagine it costing as much as replacing all the glass.

In the Iberan peninsular they use this quite often as It makes a difference to cost of cooling the buidings out there..

you may be able to find a supplier for this in TT

Thanks for the link SMc.
I was looking at getting a very good film that would last a while.
The other thing I was thinking is that the UV Cut glass would basically last forever, whereas the film would eventually have to be replaced.

Bro,

It is best to negotiate.

Sum up the number of windows.

Get a quote for all windows glass change out.

Do same for tint option.

Always best to do a package deal.

Tinting the glass will eventually require replacing so factor that cost in your final assessment as changing the glass is a permanent fix and will only require replacement due to breakage.

Not sure what you call this design but it is the swinging windows.
One pane per swinging window.
French-window style burglar proof.

I tinted the windows at home...myself.

Mine are ground floor and simple..the cost of the tint was half the labour quote.

If yours are accessible you should too.

3yrs later it's like new.

If you're interested I could get a quote for the big roll of tint ..I cant rember the length,

Pm if you want..

OP this is your solution. The "tint film" gets warped and bubbles with TT's heat.
Using the "tinted glass" works excellent .

Lifetime I would say :D :D

^ not quite true, if u use the cheapest window film then yea,
but there are residential types of window films that are designed for the intended use

when i inquired i got a quote from these ppl Pro-tint Distributors and the price was pretty good
but i wanted sorta a 1 way privacy film which they do not really have

^ when u say it wont last, how long wont it last?
because lets say in an automotive application....a decent brand tint will easily last more than 6-7yrs and thats in harsher environment than a house window will have to endure

Ended up replacing the clear panes with the pre-tinted panes.
I'm quite happy with the end product.

I would definately go with replacing the glass with pre-tinted panes ... Its probably a neater and longer lasting job, not to mention it won't look too poo-har :) ... I guess it depends on your house as well, if you living in a multi-million dollar house then you won't want any sheit tint on your window.

tinted films today are far more advanced than they were years ago.

They offer advanced UV protection and security films can also prevent break-ins.

For sure Duane but I can only imagine installing tint on a french window fabricated by the neighbourhood "Radge Coomar" can be a mission with uneven edges and the glass needs to be smooth allround...Lots of room for sheity workmanship.

as opposed to removing all the putty and glass and replacing with fresh putty and new glass on said French window?

OP from my hobbyist experience a window pane glass should cost about $60-$70 (light-dary grey tint) and half quart of putty. A quart of putty is average $45. Not sure about labour as I am a DIY.
Hope this helps with your estimate.
