Grandpa on rape charges
By NALINEE SEELAL Friday, November 28 2014
AN 87-YEAR-OLD grandfather is expected to appear in the Couva Magistrates Court charged with the rape and grievous sex assault of three young girls, after the oldest victim tearfully told her horror story to her school principal on Wednesday.
The child who is 14, complained to the principal that she was being constantly sexually abused by the elderly man for the past four years. The girl said she could not bear the abuse any longer and decided to speak out about the shameful acts after four years of silence.
The alarmed principal wasted no time in contacting the police and officers sought directions from head of Central Division Snr Superintendent Johnny Abraham. Newsday understands Abraham instructed that the schoolgirl be taken to the station to give a statement and then be medically examined.
He also instructed that the suspect be brought to the police station and detained for questioning. However, after this was done the teen had her monthly cycle which prevented a medical examination and the suspect was allowed to leave the station.
The victim’s two young siblings, aged eight and ten, later went to the police station with their 14-year-old sister and told police that they too (the eight and ten year old) were sexually abused by the elderly man. Officers returned to the suspect’s home and rearrested him.
Newsday understands the two younger victims have been medically examined following which officers were last night preparing criminal charges against the man who is expected to appear in court today charged for having sex with a minor and grievoous sexual assault.
Police investigators told Newsday the children’s mother died about four years ago and their father left them in the care of the elderly man as he (the father) went to several places seeking employment.
It was during the absence of the children’s father from the home that the alleged sexual assaults took place. The 14-year-old girl also claimed that she was threatened and was afraid to tell anyone about the assaults, but when she observed that her younger sisters were also being abused, she decided to come forward.
