Sound proofing a wooden floor?

Postby crazychinee » July 7th, 2014, 7:35 am

Anyone have experience with this type of job or can recommend a company . The first floor is a hard wooden floor but I want to have someone occupy below . I was looking at sound insulation foam , but are there any other options ?

Sound isolation foam will eliminate some of the sound but not all. What you need to do is to add mass.If your beams can support it, use a layer of concrete board , then probably some of the thick vinyl flooring material. If you want pro advice http://www.johnlsayers.com .There is a forum there with that kind of stuff

use 1x3 strips laid out on the flat side, spaced 8" apart. Then screw down 3/4" or 1" construction ply to this...then carpet underlay and some nice residential carpet.

best way fwd
run the 1x3 or 1x2 strips 90 degrees to the direction your board run for the floor (same direction as the rafters supporting the original floor.
