Postby rsxpert » April 24th, 2014, 6:21 pm

Hey guys I've had a laptop awhile a gateway ne56r series one. Recently Ive decided that I wanna upgrade a bit. Can anyone tell me some tips in choosing a new HDD and RAM? Also is there anything else I could change for maximum performance? Thanks in advance.

check the manual and see the maximum ram it can hold (just make sure its ddr3, thats the pins you have to consider)

Not worth the investment, start saving up for a total new one.
Sure you can upgrade the RAM and HDD, but in all it wont do much in combination with that CPU/internal gpu only.

u can upgrade to the max ram whick is 8gb. and hard drive well any mount

simple solution. buy a solid state drive - providing you laptop uses a SATA hard drive- and max out your memory- i dont know how old the laptop is so you may be buying DDR2..or DDR3 is its kinda new. reload the O.S and done.

You actually most likely can upgrade that CPU (may depend on bios ect.). But you still wont have an actual graphics card. So you would only be able to open some programs slightly faster. If you goal is to make it able to play games decently, your out of luck.

true..he may be able to upgrade the CPU but he needs to find the processor to fit the socket first - then a new cooling fan and heat transfer pipe assembly - for the new processor - then he hav to find out if the BIOS will recognize the CPU...

Download CPUID http://www.cpuid.com/ and run to see the type of memory you have and what banks are occupied.

ThinkOpportunity is right OP. Upgrading is almost a lost cause.
If you're really serious about having a decent laptop and willing
to fork out the money for it, then check out these guys
https://www.xoticpc.com/

They build almost any laptop with any specs you want.
And the overall price when you check it is alot less
than buying individuals parts to upgrade or even buying
something like a stock Alienware PC.

I just want it to really open programs faster and have less lags..
Not really gaming wise guys... I generally use it to store ALOT of work and need it to run at top for multi tasking browsing and typing and other things (conferencing too) and the site seems great but would rather local cause cant order anything for awhile.. currently I have 4gb ddr3 ram with one slot free and a 320gb hdd

4GB of RAM and a 320GB hard drive sounds more than sufficient
to open up / run programs efficiently. If you're still experiencing
lags it may most likely be something else that's causing the problem.
Post your full PC specs. (Although I already suspect from what you've
indicated that your system just needs a proper and thorough servicing).

Right, so Celeron is an old processor (by computer standards as well as mine).
I'm surprised it's a dual core. Yet still the specs I see are more than sufficient
for an everyday PC and you should be able to run applications
without any significant or noticeable lag. What this means is
that your system itself (software-wise) that's creating the
problem.

Having Tuneup Utilities is a good thing for novices
to have. However, the automatic maintenance only
does so much. You'll need to get your computer serviced.
If you want to try something on your own then you can
probably use some of Tuneup Utilities tools.
I'd suggest running registry cleaner, program deactivator,
startup optimizer, startup manager, registry defrag and
drive defrag (thorough) in that order.

For basic troubleshooting I would recommend starting by running a Defrag using a tool like defraggler and also running a malwarebytes scan also to ensure your pc is clean.

^Take this piece of advice into consideration as well. You don't have to use the defraggler tool
since you're already using tuneup's defrag option (which is pretty good). Malware however
tends to slow down any system significantly. Take bossman's advice and run a malware scan too
when you get chance.

this may take til tmrw then cause it seems my hdd is 4.7% heavily fragd and 25.5% partially :(
plus I have over 200k files to scan for malware .. thanks for the advice so far though

keep in mind if an OS is to far gone then no amount of cleanup can help you, in that case its best to just backup and do a fresh install, laptops now come with a recovery partition not sure if this one has it

so I tried the tests and cleaned up everything I could .. even uninstalled a few software I didn't use such as (cyberlink and such that came pre-stalled and it does move somewhat faster but not that I can see any huge dif..) any other recommendations? or should I just sell it and buy another?
and yh I know it old but If I could upgrade part by part itd be good for me instead of buying a new one cause of cash flow at the moment

Well the way I see it you have two choices.

#1: Sell / discard it
#2: Get a technician to give it a proper servicing and see how it goes from there.

There's possibly a third option but it might sound a bit far-fetched to you.
Normally what I do to save time instead of thoroughly servicing is to partition the drive, do a clean install on the new partition, start transferring / rebuilding my old OS onto the new partition (this usually takes me a couple days so a dual boot is created) and when the transfer is complete, delete the old partiton / dual boot. After that, do a thorough defrag and start shifting gears again!
