Is it possible to buy tickets for myself and another adult but the name of the he second adult can be kept 'open ' as in buying a seat ?i know that they need a name but does anyone know if you can just reserve the extra seat?

Any booking requires a name. If you want to
change passenger you will still have the space
on the flight but you'll have to buy a new ticket
for the new person.

The other option is to make a reservation (which you
still need a name for) thereby reserving a space
(reservation is free of course). If you decide to change
the person you're travelling with you can terminate the
reservation and book the space with the new name. Only
thing with this approach is that a reservation is only valid
for 24 hours.
