Question about wireless flash setup?

Postby john_smith8076 » February 23rd, 2014, 4:30 pm

I have a canon flash 320ex that works both as master and slave I want to add 2 other flashes to the setup the canon 90ex because of it's size so can I trigger the 90ex flashes with a receiver and my 320 ex? I don't want to add a transmitter because I want my 320 ex on top because of the ad assist beam any advice.

Will my 320ex trigger a receiver like the cowboy npt-04 without buying the transmitter?

The 320EX can only be used as a slave as far as I know

only the 580EX 580EXII and the 600EX-RT have master/slave capability

if you have a 7D, 60D, T3i, T4i or T5i you can use the built in wireless trigger on the camera to trigger the 320EX

my advice is to sell the 320EX and buy at least a 580EX II to use as a Master

the 90EX is a very small flash built as a popup flash for the EOS M. It is just as bad or worse than a popup flash - not worth it IMO unless you are using a EOS M and want a tiny flash

The two statements above by Duane are absolutely correct and you should be guided by them. The investment in a master flash is well worth the creative control that you gain. Things like A,B and C groups with ratios to vary power etc, etc. A master flash can be used for control only (i.e. not adding any light to the exposure) or with 'master enable' can contribute light to the final exposure. Note that in both cases it will flash (pre-flash instructions only in 'master disable' mode).

Look seriously at the 600EX-RT because you can probably get one new at a cost less than a new 580EX. You are also future proofing your gear as this is the direction (radio) that Canon is going. Don't worry, the 600EX-RT is also capable of communicating with slaves that use the older IR wireless system.
