mcrae-1Professional racing tends to be a family affair, and many times the sons and daughters of famous race car drivers pursue similar careers. John Force and his daughters, for example, or Dale Earnhardt and Dale Jr., the Andrettis, so on and so forth. In the world of rally racing, the McRae family has dominated the podium for decades, and their old race cars are as coveted as anything in the motorsports memorabilia world.
mcrae-4That all but ensures that the auction price for this 1977 Ford Escort Mk2 RS1800 Group 4 rally car, owned and driven by at least two generations of McRae racers, will go well into the six figures.
Wearing Eddie Stopbart livery, McRae family patriarch Jimmy McRae drove the old Escort to victory in the 2006 Roger Albert Clark Rally, while the late, great Clin McRae tested the escort in the Stang Forest. Colin’s brother Alister also drove the Escort to victory in the historic category of the 2008 Colin McRae Memorial Rally.
The rear-drive Escort was built by rally professionals Prepfab Motorsport Engineering, and boasts a 260 horsepower 2.0 liter, four-cylinder Sherwood engine backed by a ZF five-speed gearbox.
Silverstone Auctions estimates that on the auction block, the McRae family Escort will bring between $106,000 and $140,000 at auction. We think that might be conservative given the McRae family history, though this is definitely the kind of collectible that begs to be driven.
