Senior govt official’s son found with undeclared US currency
U.S. Currency
THE son of a senior government official was held at Piarco airport by custom officers for money laundering. The man, who is a businessman, was found with undeclared foreign currency in excess of US$20,000. Sources say the man, whose family has investments, in the hospitality industry, a travel agency and a shopping centre, was returning to Trinidad recently from Florida when he was searched and found to be in contravention of his Customs and Excise declaration form. “The government official’s relative behaves as though he has powers and could do as he pleases. “He just refused to declare the excess money,” said a source. TnT Mirror was reliably informed that the young man contacted his relative when he was detained by customs. The government official quickly contacted his people and pleaded for assistance. On the intervention of someone on high, the young man, who is said to be a football fan, was given a stern warning and his money was returned. “He was not fined and was allowed to leave,” Mirror learnt. Under normal circumstances Mirror was reliably informed that the items will be confiscated and the person guilty is liable to a fine determined by the Comptroller of Customs. The fine is normally paid at Customs and Excise Division at the airport before the guilty person is allowed to leave, Mirror was told.

What does young Warner owe the public and why? If he is nowhere to be found, why is this a bother for anyone?
