What's the deal with the popularity of these aged spiced rum of late?
Tried a couple expensive ones from different acquaintances and they were both bad tasting.
I'll stick to my old faithful - Fernandes Black Label.

Yup. All coloured spirits are artificially coloured in some way. Old barrels that had other spirits, new barrels bunn up wit pitch oil, dead cockroach etc. JK

Ever notice how the single barrel rum angostura line has a whisky odour?

Well yeah I read about that some years back. Almost all commercial/popular brands use... Think all grocery brands. Even Talisker, glenmorangie, even that fancy arse Glenfiddich.

The scotches that use the traditional sherry barrels brought over from Spain and the Armagnac and Cognac barrels from France, etc are the ones that crack the 2500plus quid prices. Picture the fancy chunky King George bottle. When you think you pay ah pong and ah crong down here for yuh pretty rums...

Dunno about the sashimi whiskies though. Yet to try East Asian whisky

Not surprised to see Johnnie walker uses it. That's basically the bluebird sylphy of whiskies. Ain't cheap but aint the best.

I know alot of seniors who cherish their blue labels, even have more than two sealed with personal engraving from the JW Brydens drive some years ago. They tout it as "the best", "unrivalled purest quality".

On a side note, some really good bourbons have no colouring, by regulations. Once the bottle is marked 'Straight' there are no additives by law. I prefer the tastings of bourbon to the scotch readily available in the groceries.

Makers Mark is a nice one, not too much the Makers 46. Woodford Reserve ia a nice smooth one too.

You could put Black in a Blue bottle and most of your "discerning" scotch drinkers wouldn't know. IMO the smoothest JW was the Gold when it had the 18yr age statement, I see the Platinum carried that age and now there's an Ultimate 18 year old JW, have not tasted either but the Ultimate has a similar bottle and box design to the old Gold Label. Naughty Grape has it for just under $800

It’s pretty good. Better than the 21 yr and better than everything from Angostruer.

Rum always have a bigger flavour profile, and as mentioned^, me, too, eh have much trust in 'Stura and dey pretentious line. Thank goodness the Bitters have an international reputation to maintain or that and all woulda get shorting.

El Dorado line almost as famous as the Puerto Rican rum Bacardi, so quality approved
