Rapist lured into trap

A 31-YEAR-OLD Laventille man was lured into a police trap and arrested during a “sting” operation on Monday afternoon, following close work between a woman whom he had raped and Central Division police.

Police told Newsday at about 3 am on Saturday, the woman was in a car with her boyfriend, returning home from a date, when they got into an argument. The man stopped his car and ordered the woman out near the Brian Lara Stadium in Tarouba. He then left her stranded at the side of the road and sped off.

The woman later told police she was so afraid and her only thought was to get home safely so, when a white Nissan B14 car pulled alongside her and the driver offered to give her a lift to her home, she did not hesitate and got into the car.

While in the car, the driver asked her why she was alone at the side of the road at that hour of the morning. The driver cursed the woman’s boyfriend for abandoning her at that hour especially given how bad crime is in this country. He promised to drop her home safely.

On nearing Freeport, the car picked up speed and when the woman asked him to slow down, the driver ordered her to stay quiet. The woman later told police that she knew she was going to be attacked and decided to comply with the driver’s instructions.

The woman was taken to a lonely area in Carlsen Field by the driver who ordered her to lie on the ground and take off her clothes. As he started to rape her, the woman later told police, she decided she did not want to be murdered and as such, did not put up any fight.

Seeing that she was compliant, the woman said, the rapist started to express his love for her and even asked for her cellular phone number. She told him she did not have a phone and the rapist gave her his cellular phone, telling her not to worry and he would call her.

The woman told police after the rape, the man told her she was something special and he wanted to see her again. The rapist said he would call her and arrange a date. The woman said she smiled at the rapist and told him, “no problem, call me.”

After being dropped off in the Freeport area, the woman made her way to the police station and reported the assault to officers. The woman was later medically examined by the district medical officer who confirmed that she had been sexually assaulted.

She later met with Superintendent Johnny Abraham, Sgt Mohammed, PC Sampson and WPC John. Superintendent Abraham praised her for keeping calm and her wits about her despite such a traumatic event. Together, he hatched a plan with the woman.

True to his word, the rapist contacted the woman on Monday at 2 pm, saying he needed to see her. He expressed his love for her, police sources told Newsday. The woman played along, saying she too needed him as well. They agreed to meet outside a popular fast food outlet in Chaguanas.

The woman then contacted the police and Supt Abraham quickly put together a party of police officers to participate in the “sting” operation. Plain clothes officers, including Abraham, staked out the area outside the fast food restaurant as the trap was set.

At 4 pm, the rapist arrived dressed in a pair of jeans, a cream t-shirt and wearing a gleaming, thick gold chain around his neck. He reeked of cologne and was well groomed, police sources said.

Seeing the woman leaning on the wall outside the fast food outlet, the rapist approached her and with a smile, held on to her arm. As the woman looked up at her attacker, she gave Supt Abraham — who was hiding nearby — the signal that this was the man who had raped her, by holding his hand. Abraham, sources said, gave a signal of his own and his officers moved in, pointing their service weapons at the rapist, who police sources added, appeared dumbstruck at what was taking place. He was arrested without incident all the while pleading his innocence.

Up to late yesterday, he remained in police custody and is expected to be placed on an Identification Parade. The woman was praised for once again staying calm and participating in the successful “sting”. She is continuing to receive counselling from officers from the Police Service Victims Support Unit. Investigations are continuing into the matter.

I don't know who worse....the boyfriend for leaving his girlfriend at the side of the road, or the rapist who fell in love with his victim?!
