MADINAH HOUSE
"More than just a shelter"
This non profit company is a registered NGO. It is run by a Board of Women and was granted charitable status in 2005. Madinah House offers temporary shelter and provides a secure private environment for the female survivors (and their children) of domestic violence. Referrals are via police, Families in Action and social workers.
Any woman who is a survivor of domestic violence can seek refuge, with her kids (if applicable), at Madinah House, it does not matter what religion, ethnic background or neighbourhood the sister comes from. We are funded by donations from coporate citizens and individuals of the public. We rely on our annual fundraiser to offset the running expenses of the home.
A victim of domestic violence can call 800-SAVE. All information is confidential and the location of the home is not public information. Only the Board of Directors, a few matrons and a few key persons know its location. the home offers 6 months of emergency housing, food, clothing, medical assistance and counseling for the mother and kids. Other services include:
- crisis intervention and peer support via telephone
- counseling to explore alternatives
- living skills- household, financial management, parenting skills
- social networking, job connections and placement
- children are taught conflict resolution so that they do not become future abusers
- legal aid
