BEWARE when buying a boat!

Postby RIPEBREDFRUIT » May 3rd, 2012, 8:47 am

With the recent speculation of customs regarding USed boats that are NOT registered in TRinidad and Tobago.
There are MANY boats that have been brought into the country that are registered abroad so that they do NOT have to PAY import duties.

IF you are looking at buying a boat locally that was imported that was never registered in trinidad, when Customs in trinidad really get serious and make all these vessels Register YOU as the new owner will be liable for those payments.

Aka........... IMPORT DUTIES and VAT and REGISTRATION Fees, plus go through the entire lenghty process

Just be wary.........

Exactly.
Lots of boat owners who brought in boats thru the back door gonna feel it..

Before purchasing a boat down here, one can simply get the Boat Owner's name and go to the Min. of Trade and see if there is there is a genuine import doc.

A prospective buyer can ask the owner to provide proof of shipping docs as well as customs duties/ Vat payments

Do Maritime laws circumvent local Custom screening when sailing vessels from the US?

never buy a foreign used goat from Tobago, more than likely it has been roughed up on the edge of a hill or something and reverse gear does stutter 3 times or something apparantly

The boat can just be repainted and renamed and re registered locally as a locally built boat... nobody checking to see if its authentic. I don't think they have "chassis numbers like on cars" or the anything alike on them (can be wrong)!

What about goats, do you have to register them? If so what happens when you curry one is it de-registered? Is there an under ground market for unregistered goats? If so I am sure there are a few catholic priest that might want this investigated.

Many of the locally produced boats DO have HULL numbers on them and have relevant documents from the manufacturer for proof.

Besides repainting and renaming a hull that has Obvious differences in hull design to trained eyes is not going to HIDE anything.
