WTK: Proceedure to buy from Ebay

Postby Kasey » February 7th, 2012, 7:37 am

I have my own skybox and currently buy from Amazon ALONE. I am very skeptical about buying from anywhere else, but I see alot of items on Ebay that I would like to purchase. Someone told me I had to get paypal and stuff but i really dont know much bout this stuff. Can anyone assist?

eBay is a trap!
it finds creative ways for you to part with your money
but yeah, set up a paypal account, and verify before bidding that the seller will ship internationally

get a PayPal account and to be extra safe get a VISA debit card instead of using your credit card

You can also sell items on ebay and receive money using the VISA debit card

Why the confusion ? I bought a BMW from Atlanta on ebay after winning the auction...back in 2005. Did not have any problems.

Wow at some of the posts here.... ive been buying from ebay for about 4 years now consistently with no problems using my paypal account. One just has be smart when buying, if it looks to good to be true then it usually is..an inferior product maybe. Ive gotten a lot of good deals, even bought my Samsung Galaxy S2 there last year.

Twice it happened that i paid for an item an never received it, on both occasions Paypal customer support AND Ebay Customer protection jumped in to resolve the issue and made sure my money was credited to me.

If ebay was such scam i doubt it would have been around for so long, just use common sense when shopping and build relationships with reputable sellers. Read all item descriptions properly. I use ebay alot more than amazon because i get better prices and amazon kills you with shipping.

just create a Paypal account, its pretty easy, sign up with ur skybox address an u in the game, i buy all my stuff from ebay, has more variety to choose from an u can even get stuff not manufactured anymore. you just have to monitor ur sellers status, each seller is rated for their reliability and u can even email them an ask them questions.

im using it like 2 years now an never had any issues, i even purchased a few items from china, takes a bit longer to reach here tho.

Set up a paypal account. They will send a code to your CC acct to verify and charge $1 which you will get back. Set up your ebay account with your skybox address.

Look for stuff from top rated sellers from the US (faster shipping). Beware of exorbitant shipping fees and hidden tricks (report them) like a catalog with an item rather than the item itself.

You can bid for items (i personally feel the bidding is rigged). Click on "buy it now" to get stuff without bidding.

I purchase an average of one item a week from ebay, no problems. If you ever get a problem you can initiate a dispute in paypal and they will hold payment from going to the seller till the case is resolved. you can get refunded also.

Items I bought on ebay for 2012 thus far:

Used Sansui remote control
Dell Laptop Battery
Dewalt Cordless Drill
Dewalt Charger
Spy Pen DVR
CCTV Camera
HTC Aria Cell Phone
5 Packs of GNC muscle builder
HTC Aria Case
Double Din Car DVD Player (no brand)
LCD TV Telescopic Mount
Surround speakers mount
Cross Pen and Pencil Set
Sheaffer Pen refills

The real downside to ebay is actually selling on it. Even though it's the sellers that pay the bills through listing fees. On item disputes, ebay almost always sides with the buyer. About a year ago I listed a new leather upholstery kit for a vehicle with 8 high res photos of the entire kit, it's part number, color number, stitch pattern, etc. It was made for a specific vehicle with specific options and I did everything I could to list it properly. I felt if I missed anything, the 8 high res photos would more than cover it.

Ebay allows you to list items and choose whether you will allow the buyer to return the item or not, I selected 'Will not accept returns" because the item was new and mint condition, plus I'm not a regular seller. I list stuff I come across in deals that I do not need, I might make $400USD a year from ebay if I'm lucky.

It sold for just over $100USD which is a great deal for a leather kit, but I didn't need it so no big deal. They paid and I shipped it out a few days later. No problems at all with payment and delivery. I get a message from the buyer a few days after the item was received saying it would not fit their vehicle because of an option difference that was noted in the listing. I explained this was described in the auction (with photos) and would not accept the return unless it was damaged. The buyer agreed but said I had 7 days to refund payment or they'd file a dispute and just ship it back to me regardless! Sure enough... I get a dispute notice a week later and the item is delivered back to my address. Ebay reviews the case and sides with the buyer, and pulls the money out of my paypal account.

Thankfully I was able to re-sell the item for a similar amount but the new description was nearly two pages long (went to great lengths to explain which vehicles and options it would NOT fit) with many more photos... Just be careful if you choose to sell items on ebay. There are some sellers that go as far as to videotape them packing and shipping the item due to "Item was received damaged" claims.

Also... the fees are getting worse. You have to pay the Insertion Fee to list the item. This ranges, sometimes it's as low as 0.30 cents USD for a basic auction with one photograph. I don't list items until ebay has a promotion where you can have multiple images at a discounted price. Once the item sells, ebay charges you a "Final Value Fee", which is a percentage of the item's selling price (which is more complex, the percentage changes as the item's value rises. Selling a car? get ready to bleed). Think you're clever and can just add the final value fee as part of the shipping? Think again, there's a SEPARATE final value fee for that too. Oh... and the ability to pay for the item via Paypal (owned by ebay) has it's own fee as well.

I recently sold a console for a truck I no longer own on ebay for $50USD + $20USD for shipping. The auction had 6 images, so here's the cost breakdown

Listing Fee (6 pics) - $3.70
Final Value Fee #1 - $4.50
Final Value Fee #2 (shipping) - $1.80
Paypal Fee - $2.33

So in the end, I actually got $57.70 of the $70 selling price.

It's a cost of doing business I suppose, I sold an item I would've never been able to offload locally and for a decent price. Someone got a great console they would've never been able to purchase for a lower price and I got $57.70 I didn't have before to spend on other stuff.

Looking to buy a donor car from ebay. Anyone have any experience with buying a vehicle on ebay and having it shipped to Trinidad. If the vehicle is over 30 years old and left hand drive, can it be registered?
