A 63-year-old father of seven of Exchange Village, Couva was arrested at a construction site shortly after midday yesterday, hours after a relative lodged a report at the Couva Police Station that he had been sexually interfering with his seven-year-old daughter.

The man was allegedly found hiding between some heavy equipment at a construction site by a party of police officers led by Superintendent Johnny Abraham.

He was taken to the Couva Police station where he was being quizzed up till late yesterday in connection with the alleged sexual assault.

According to reports, on Saturday the wife of the suspect went to the Couva police station and made a report that she was informed by her seven-year-old daughter that the man had been having sex with her.

While the woman was at the station, the suspect grabbed his four-year-old daughter and six-year- old son and took them to the home of a relative and then went into hiding.

The children were found yesterday at the Mc Bean Village, Couva home of the man’s relative.

The seven-year-old girl was medically examined on Saturday and it was determined she had been sexually interfered with on more than one occasion.

The girl told police on several occasions last year the suspect waited until her mother slept at nights and took her to the lower part of their home where he had sex with her. On Saturday, a party of officers led by Superintendent Abraham and including Cpls Radhay Kissoon, Persad and PCs D’abreau and Lewis carried out a search for the suspect but he was not found. Early yesterday officers received a tip off that the man was hiding at a construction site owned by one of his relatives in the Pt Lisas area. When officers went to the site they found the suspect trying to conceal himself between some pieces of heavy equipment.

He declared his innocence when questioned by police and was taken to the Couva police station where he remained in custody up until late yesterday.

Police have since ordered the two younger daughters of the man be medically examined as part of the ongoing investigation.

Officers of the Couva police station are continuing enquiries.

For every case reported... I am sure that there are HUNDREDS that go undetected, or family shame keep the thruth from reaching the courts. Poor children .

I don't see the point of these registries in Trinidad for a few reasons:

1) There is much abuse of his abroad, as women know that once a man gets on this, even if he is proven innocent later, he cannot get his name off of it. It is also not going to be free and people will have to be employed to maintain it.

2) Trinidad is really small. I actually remember walking in Curepe and a man called out to another "Raper man from Deigo!!!" and the man scamper away. We know how to publicly shame people here.

3) Most sexual predators are cowards and are opportunistic. Some would have never even done their nastiness if a parent had not left a child in their care... being a trusted family member/ friend. They just don't jump out of the bushes, hog tie a victim and then do their nastiness.... unless of course that is their M.O. As much as this may seem patronizing, they have human rights too, and once someone has served their debt to society, being labled as something forever really would be a hinderance to their rehabilitation.

yup, father was the sole breadwinner so she was afraid of what the consequences would be..
